58$ caper leads to burglary arrest
Deputies eyewitness adult and 2 juveniles inside local business
A 58« burglary could have been
much worse if it were not for the
sharp eye of a Reagan County
Deputy Sheriff. Last week, Reagan
County deputies arrested Paul
Moreno, Jr. and two juveniles for
the burglary of PC Tire and Moreno
was apprehended with 58c in his
pocket allegedly from a cash regis-
ter inside the building.
Deputy Hector DeLaGarza ob-
served the three suspects in the
building at P.C. Tire in Big Lake
about 2:20 in the morning last week.
DeLaGarza contacted the Sheriffs
office and Deputy Reber was sent as
a backup.
The officers observed the sus-
pects in the building hitting the
vending machines and moving
about the building.
Deputy Reber approached the
building and tried the door knob. It
made a noise and alerted the sus-
pects who then fled the building.
Two of the subjects were appre-
hended at the site and the other was
apprehended later.
Louis Colbert, owner of P.C.
Tire Service advised deputies there
were mainly pennies missing out of
the cash register. The candy ma-
chines had broken frontglasses with
candy, chips, and assorted items
missing from the machine. These
items were located in aplastic sack
in the back room of the business
where it appeared the subjects
dropped them while fleeing as nu-
merous bags of chips were scattered
about the floor.
The burglary could have been
more damaging to P.C. Tire. A
large business receipt type book
containingchargc tickets along with
two speakers and two file drawers
were also found in the back room.
Colbert advised that all these items
were removed from the front of the
business. The book was taken from
a desk drawer and the 2 file drawers
were removed from a filing cabinet.
All the items were photographed
byRcbcrandSheriffGon/alcs. One
juvenile and Moreno were taken to
the sheriffs office. The other ju-
venile was released to his father.
Moreno was booked into jail for
burglary.
Moreno later allegedly said he
and one of the juveniles kicked in
the back door to gain entry. Moreno
allegedly told officers he broke into
the building seeking revenge on the
owner Louis Colbert who Moreno
said was trying to cheat him out of
his unemployment benefits.
According to the police report,
Moreno admitted he did get a
handful of pennies out of the cash
register. 58c in pennies was re-
trieved from his right front pocket.

Waiting for the million dollar truck driver
I watched the Olympics along with everyone else
and marveled at the abilities of some of the athletes.
We who watched saw 13 and 14 year old divers
performing dives that seasoned vets couldn't do just a
few Olympics back. We saw some unbelievable
gymnastics. We watched as the USA blazed around
the track and set a new world record in the 4x4(X) meter
relay.
It was several years back that I remember being in
Austin at the Texas Relays and seeing Texas Southern
run a 3:07 mile relay. It was then that I decided that
was the fastest any four people could ever run that
race. The '92 USA team ran a 2:55 something. Surely
that is as fast as any mile relay can be run. Surely until
next lime that is.
Then there was the dream team. The men's
basketball team. I know there are some sports fanatics
who think it was great that United States professionals
could compete in the Olympics. There were others of
us that wondered why our pros were there at all. Iam
in the indifferent crowd. I just want a winner.
Charles Barkley, the bad boy of the team, had a lot
of controversial moments. The camera caught him
elbowing an Angolan or somebody just for the heck of
it. What those who saw him do that and were critical
of him for it do not realize is that he is just as likely to
elbow that poor Angolan and then turn around and
flatten someone from San Antonio. That's just
Barkley. He summed up his feelings by saying he
enjoyed the Olympics, but it was just another job for
him "It’s our job to just beat 'em and go home." No
apologies from Barkley. He had no qualms about any
of it. No pie in the sky brotherhood of mankind for
Barkley. Get in his way and you get run over He was
not there to make friends. He was there to beat the
competition and show how good the USA really is.
Barkley said it was plain to him that the other countries
do not like the USA and he sure didn't have to like
them. He just wanted to beat 'em. I have to say in a
way I admired him at the time of the interview for his
views. It was not too many years ago that a black
person could not say things like that and not be
criticized by other blacks.
It's time to beat those other countries and go home.
That includes the Japanese, Korea, Germans, French,
and all the others.
Now Barkley was roundly criticized. Bull won't be
one of those who criticize him. He has very focused
goals. He wanted to win. The methods he sometimes
uses arc not desirable and that is what most people do
not like. But Barkley and other athletes both black and
white that wore the USA colors sounded like they
were competing not only for themselves, but for their
country. That sounded good to me.
Barkley, Michael Jordan and the others make huge
sums of money in their sport. It's commonplace now
to sec millionaire ballplayers, but it was not so com-
mon a while back.
Consider this:
In 1961, Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's long
standing record by hitting 61 home runs in the ex-
panded 162 game season. Another of Babe's records
was broken on April 8, 1974, when Henry Aaron hit
his715thcareerhomcrun. Also in 1974 Lou Brock set
a new all time high by stealing 118 bases in a single
season.
However, Catfish hunter set a different kind of
record for baseball in 1975 when he scored high
against Yankee management by walking home-with a
seven figure contract. Up until that time, the only
other athlete to jump in this high a tax bracket scored
his points in basketball. After retiring from the court
as the highest paid player in history, Wilt-the stilt-
Chambcrlain added inches to his stature by signing a
$1.8 million contract in 1973 to coach the San Diego
Conquistadores. As the field became more crowded
with free agents, players and their lawyers were
warming up in the bullpen for the big play of the
1970's....the million dollar contract for the All Ameri-
can jock.
I'd rather see the competition heat up for the million
dollar pumper, welder, roustabout, truck driver,
electrician, and yes the million dollar editor.
weightroom, and we are also trying
to raise money for a charter bus for
the night of the Clint game. By
sponsoring one or more of the Re-
agan County Athletes, you can help
us achieve these goals."
Last year’s lift-a-thon was very
successful and the coaches and
athletes arc planning even better
things with a year’s experience un-
der their belts.
As a sponsor, you would pledge
one cent for each pound the athlete
lifts on a combined total of four lifts.
The four lifts each athlete will
complete arc: bench press, squat,
power clean, and deadlift.
Example:
Bench press 200
Squat 300
Power clean 170
Deadlift 320

Owls photo day August 14
Coach Sam Harrell has issued a public invitation to all parents,
relatives, and friends of Reagan County football players to attend
picture/media day for the Owls. The day is set for Friday, August 14.
"We invite everyone who would like to take pictures of their son or
favorite player or be in a picture with them to come on out and
participate while the players are readily available. Sometimes justafter
games there is such a rush that parents don't have time to take photos
of their players. This would be a good time to take that photo for your
home albums."
Newspapers including the Big Lake Wildcat, the Odessa American,
and San Angelo Standard Times will also be on hand to take pictures
for their file use. The Wildcat will also take pictures for the football
programs at this time.
