Longtime commissioner served community well
lit has been quite a week,
filled with sad newt. We
need to all pray and then
pray tome more for Haiti. Just
watching the news, showing the
faces or all the injured and the
conditions in which they are living
should be enough to melt even the
coldest of hearts.
This area is suffering, they need
our prayers and they need what
help we can give them. If you can
donate please do and even if you
can't donate you can still help by
praying to our amazing God that
he might reach out his loving arms
to these people.
Now, on a sad local note, it is w ith
so much sadness that I write this:
my friend Buddy Purvis passed
from this life Wednesday night. I
know by the time you are reading
this you will have already have
heard this news, but I still have to
do this because I loved Buddy and
I need to honor this man in what
little way 1 can.
Everyone knew Buddy. He was
someone that has always just
been here. Most people knew the
side of him that was stubborn and
determined to do things his way,
but what some didn't always
know or care to understand was
that Buddy wanted to do things
the way that he honestly believed
would help Polk County and help
his beloved Corrigan area the
best.
His temper was famous w hich
is not a bad thing because he used
that temper to help convince oth-
ers to do something to benefit this
county. He was as straight-for-
ward as anyone could possibly
be. There was nothing two-faced
about Buddy. If he thought you
were wrong, then he told you so.
If you proved him wrong, then he
accepted it and went on with life.
We have so many "fake" folks
around us; we need more Buddy
Purv ises in this world.
Buddy cared for others. Most
folks will never know all the ways
that Buddy helped people and he
never bragged about it. it was just
part of life. Gosh, how many bags
of groceries did Buddy show up
at people's houses with when he
knew they needed help?
Tough — yes he was, by any-
one’s standard, a tough man. Heck
I think Buddy helped invent that
word, but he had a soft side of him
that made you love him.
He never failed to say “yes
ma’am” to any ladies or even in his
last few months stumble to open a
door for any woman.
Buddy was true to his word and
a lot of folks just didn't like that
but it never changed him. Gosh, he
was just larger than life in his pres-
ence and personality and he can
never be replaced.
There is now a void in his fam-
ily's lives that is just beyond un-
derstanding for them right now
because Buddy Purvis loved his
family unconditionally. But the
measure of this man Buddy Purv is
goes much farther than this.
His friends will never have the
pleasure of hav ing another friend
quite like him. His community,
the area he loved so much —- well,
they have lost their strongest sup-
porter who never stopped try ing to
help them.
I love you Buddy Purvis and I
am so honored that 1 had the plea-
sure of hav ing you for my friend.
I guess I can sum all this up but
say ing there are two ty pes of peo-
ple in this world —one that wants
.to be spoon-fed and one that will
share his spoon (his help) with
you. Buddy Purvis would always
share his spoon with anyone that
needed it.
I have been telling Buddy for
years I wanted to write a book
about him and call it “The Life and
Times of Buddy Purvis."
Buddy always laughed and said
one book wouldn't hold it all, it
would have to be like a set of en-
cyclopedias.
As I sit here crying over my
friend I remarked that I will never
get to answer my phone again and
hear his rough old voice saying
“What's going on down there?"
Another friend answered my
statement with, “Never underesti-
mate the power of Buddy Purvis."
I had to laugh through my tears
because that statement was just so
true, many a person underestimated
Buddy through the years and most
of them were proven wrong.
Buddy could and did move
mountains when he needed to. To
his dear family, I cannot imag-
ine your pain because mine is so
strong so yours must be unbear-
able. But, to use a very old quote
I wouldn’t have missed it for the
world. By that I mean 1 wouldn't
missed hav ing the pleasure of hav-
ing a friend like Buddy Purvis.
Buddy you were and shall always
be one of the good guys and you
were nothing short of my hero!
Godspeed Buddy, and please
keep an eye on us because we still
need y ou so much. I love y ou dear-
ly my friend.

News Around Town
How about that freezing weath-
er? It’s been a while since we had
weather that cold for that many
days. Most of the water compa-
nies in Polk County had major
problems with all the pipes that
were busting everywhere.
At times like this when a water
company knows that it is losing a
lot of water but nobody is report-
ing a big leak then it takes a while
to track down where the loss of
water is coming from so we just
have to be patient during times
like last weekend.
But by now hopefully every-
thing is back to normal for every -
one. I hope you didn't receive any
damage at your homes from the
freezing temperatures. Overall
once again I think our little com-
munity handled this very well.
I want to wish my sister a
speedy recovery from her acci-
dent and hav ing to deal with her
injured ribs.
Have a great week, now is the
time to tell your friends how
much you really care bout them.
If you have a really great friend
then you're a really lucky person
so take lime to tell them that!

Benefit scheduled for Frank Henderson on Jan. 23
"TTwould like to share some of
I the things that we learn at our
JLchurch and are putting into
our daily life. Sometimes we learn
things, but we really don't know
how important they really are until
one day the light goes on and we
remember that we were taught that
weeks or years ago.
That's why it's so important to
pay attention and heiocused when
the word is going fortII, because we
learn something new every day.
The eight principles that we are
studying and learning to apply in
our lives are just the basic tools
needed in order to unlock the keys
to heaven. I wanted to share them
with you and hope that they bless
you the way they have blessed me.
They are faith, virtue, knowledge,
self-control, patience, godliness,
brotherly kindness and lov e. These
are the tools to inherit the kingdom
of God.
First, I thank God that the
conditions are more tolerable than
last week. I lov e the cold, but there
were just a few too many cold day s
in a row, to have to wake up to
freezing temperatures.
I did notice that it also kept a lot
of people home from church last
Sunday, so remember in all things
give praise - and that includes the
cold temperatures - because that is
also a part of God’s plan for us all.
Let’s enjoy it while it lasts, because
summer will be here before we
know it.
