Snoring: Just Annoying
Or Dangerous?
(NAPS) Approximately 20 mil-
lion Americans snore every night.
Many of these snorers are unaware of
the dangerous side of this nocturnal
annoyance.
Snoring has been linked w ith the
life-threatening disorder sleep apnea
syndrome, in which breathing stops
intermittently and the blood oxygen
level drops. According to Dr. Marivi
Ora. medical director. Sleep
Laboratory. Deborah Heart and l ung
Center in Browns Mills. N.J.. breath-
ing can stop for 25 to 30 seconds up
to 1000 times per night.
The snoring-sleep apnea connec-
tion occurs because both may be
caused by a blocked airway. The
blockage, caused by the tongue and
soft palate (the soft part of the roof of
the mouth) does not allow air to
move in and out of the lungs. A loss
of muscle control causes the sott
palate to collapse and the tongue to
fall back in the throat, which cuts off
breathing. The brain wakes up the
body for seconds at a time in order to
start breathing again.
Sleep apnea causes daytime
sleepiness, fatigue, mood changes,
loss of concentration and early morn-
ing headaches. Long-term effects
include high blood pressure, irregular
heart rhythms, cardiac arrest and
even death.
Sleep apnea is diagnosed by a
polysomnograph. a non-invasive.
overnight test conducted in a sleep
disorders lab.
'Often the patient's partner can
help pinpoint this sleep disorder."
said Dr. Ora. "A patient living alone
may only be aware of the effects of
severe sleep deprivation."
If sleep apnea is diagnosed, treat-
ment methods are available to reduce
or eliminate the disorder and the
snoring.
For more information on sleep
apnea, write to: Deborah Heart and
Lung Center, Public Relations
Department, 212 Trenton Road,
Browns Mills, NJ 08015.

Thank You
Living in Big Lake is great. Your special kindness
brought such joy it really made the day, and when
any group of people does the thoughtful thing you
did, it's hard to find words warm enough to thank
each one of you. May the Lord Bless each one.

FIRST BISHOP OF ROME!
LINUS WAS AN EARLY CHRISTIAN IN ROME, A FRIEND TO BOTH ST RAUL AND TIMO-
THY HIS NAME IS MENTIONED BUT ONCE IN THE BIBLE, BY ST PAUL IN HIS LETTER TO
TIMOTHY (II TIM. 4:2l). THAT THE FIRST BISHOP OF ROME, AFTER THE APOSTLE5, WAS
NAMED LINUS IS ACCEPTED BY ALL THE ANCIENT HISTORIANS. THE ASSERTION BY
IRENAEUS, AND CORROBORATED BOTH BY EUSEBIUS AND THEODORET IS SUFFIC-
IENT PROOF THAT THE BISMOP AND ST PAULS FRIEND WERE ONE AND THE SAME!
THE DATE OF HIS APPOINTMENT AND THE LIMITS OF MS AUTHORITY ARE POINTS
THAT ARE OBSCURED BY TIME AND HISTORY ALTHOUGH EUSEBIUS STATES THAT HE
BECAME BISHOP OF ROME AFTER THE DEATH OF ST, PETER. THE DURATION OF HI5
OFFICE IS GIVEN BY EUSEBIUS AS A.D. 66-80!
IT IS PRESUMED THAT LINUS WAS BISHOP IN
ROME ONLY OF THE CHRISTIANS OF SENT1LE
ORIGIN, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME ANOTHER
BISHOP HAD AUTHORITY OVER OLDER
JEWISH CHRISTIANS! NO LOFTY PRE-
EMINENCE WAS ATTACHED TO THE
OFFICE. IN THOSE DAYS, IN FACT
IT WAS DOWNRIGHT DANGEROUS AS
ALL CHRISTIANS WERE LIABLE TO
BEING HUNTED DOWN, PERSECUTED
AND MARTYRED! AND IN FACT,
THIS WAS THE WAY LINUS" LIFE
DID END -AS IT DID FOR SO
MANY OF THE EARLY
CHRISTIANS!
