able, but as he learns more
about pitching he is likely to
improve his slider and change-
up even more, and become one
of the most dominant pitchers
in the game. Tyler Kolek out

is clearly a No. I guy for the

this is why it made so much
sense that they would take him
Shepherd
Tyler Kolek
Miami thinks Kolek is best player in MLB Draft
Name: Tyler Kolek
Age and School: 18. Shepherd High School, Texas
Height: 6'5-
Weight: 240 lbs.
Position: Pitcher
Sentence Summary: The hardest throwing arm in the draft.
Tyler Kolek is a hard-to-miss talent who should go in the top
five of the 20I4 MLB Draft.
Tyler Kolek (s an electrifying right-handed pitcher from
Texas. What stands out first about Kolek is his fastball, which
has been clocked in triple digits on multiple occasions. Kolek
also throws a slider and a curve, both of which have room for
improvement but are already good pitches. Kolek's changeup
is what you’d expect from a high schooler who throws in the
upper 90's, which is to say not very good. However, once he
starts throwing it more often, I expect that it will catch up
to speed. Kolek's pitches show just how high of a ceiling he
could have and why teams are considering drafting him so
early.
Reasons why the Marlins would consider Kolek:
The last time they took a high school flame-throwing
right-handed pitcher in the first round went pretty well (Jose
Fernandez).
If he's still on the board at third, most teams would consider
taking Kolek to be the easy or right choice.
The Marlins have recently taken a lot of quick rising pitch-
ers with their high draft picks. Kolek would be a long-term
project whom they wouldn't have to rush because of the
plethora of arms in front of him.
Kolek is one of the hardest throwing high school pitchers
ever and to pass up on a talent like that could potentially come
back to bite the Marlins.
£1HEPHERI) With
^^the second pick in
the MLB draft the
Miami Marlins selected Tyler
Kolek. RHP out of Shepherd
(TX) High School. Kolek was
considered one of the top four
pictures in the MLB draft,
because of his outstanding fast-
ball and outstanding control.
The 6-5 250 right-hander
has the size and poise of
Roger Clemens. In fact many
analysts favorably compare
him to the longtime great.
With a fastball that has been
clocked near 103 mph. Kolek
can easily blow away Major
League hitters. He also has an
incredibly good slider, and a
quality changeup as well. In
fact, his changeup looks so
good because of his dominat-
with their first round pick in
the MLB draft He will pair
nicely with Marlins ace Jose
Fernandez
It is not just that he has
three quality pitches to work
with, but also that he has gixxl
command over his stuff. He
does not need to overthrow his
pitches, so he is not wild with
his fastball. He also has a good
smooth motion that does not
tip his pitches or location.
As a senior at Shepherd
High School this year, Kolek
pitched in ten games, went
5-2 and had an incredible
0.35 F.RA. He pitched in 60.1
innings and gave up just 23
hits, eight w'alks and struck out
126. Many may wonder how
he could have such a low FRA
and actually have two losses.
This has come from the fact
that his teammates made 22 er
rors while in the field, and cost
him 14 unearned runs.
While he w ill not get a lot
of opportunity to showcase it.
the right-hander is also a pretty
good hitter He hit .313 this
season, with two home runs
and 16 RBI in 67 at-bats.
Kolek has agreed to play at
TCU next season, so there may
be some question as to sign-
ability of Kolek However, he
has the stuff to be a dominant
Major League pitcher w ithin
three seasons and the money
that will be offered to him may
be too good to pass up. He is
clearly too good a talent tor a
team not to take a risk on
While there are some chal-
lenges in signing him. it was
clear that Miami Marlins felt
he has too much of a talent to
pass up on and so they selected
Tyler Kolek out of Shepherd
(TX) High School in the first
round of the MLB draft II
they are able to sign him and
gel him started up the ladder
of their minor league system,
expect to see him in a Major
League uniform in three years

FENfEV WOOD LAKES CHAPTER
Habitat at Lake
Livingston for Fish
and Wildlife!
What Happened?
Lake Livingston has traditionally been an exceptional Largemouth Bass fishery and a haven for ducks, wading birds,
and other wildlife. The lake was completed in 1971. As the lake has aged, many acres of aquatic plants have
vanished, and the quality of standing timber has greatly diminished. These issues, coupled with turbidity, have greatly
hurt the shallow water habitat. The good news is we can help restore habitat for fish and wildlife populations
resulting in better Bass fishing and improved water quality! It will also help the surrounding community economies!
ing fastball. When he spots the
changeup it makes his fastball
look like it is exploding toward
the plate.
What is so tantalizing
about Kolek is that he is just
18-years-old. He clearly has
plenty of upside and this is
what has scouts drooling about
him. Whether he can add much
more to his fastball is question-
What is Being Done?
The Piney Wood Lakes Chapter Texas Master Naturalist (PWLCTMN),
Friends of Reservoirs (FOR), Trinity River Authority (TRA), and Texas
Parks and Wildlife (TPWD) have partnered to restore fish and wildlife
habitat in Lake Livingston. PWLCTMN has 3 tanks growing American
Water Willow. It will take much more than 3 tanks, so we have
partnered with the Livingston, Shepherd and Goodrich Independent
School Districts to grow these plants and to assist in planting them.
Our goal is to produce and plant 10,000+ plants a year.
What’s Next?
FOR awarded a $20,000 grant to the PWLCTMN to help with this
project. We need hands-on volunteers, as well as additional funds to
build more nurseries and purchase supplies.
