Two death sentences imposed in
one day in the district court at Beau-
mont is going some, all right. One
was for a foul murder and the other
for a nameless crime against a child,
and the juries of Beaumont are to be
. congratulated. If like punishment
were meted out to a greater number
of criminals who go to trial in Texas
but who, by some hook or crook, es-
cape the penalties of the law, it would
do much towards putting down sum-
mary justice, or mob law, as it is
termed.
Everybody who can do so should
go out to the park tomorrow after-
noon to witness the ball game be-
tween the Orange High school and
the Port Arthur High school. An ef-
fort is being made to interest the i
High school boys and young men of
the city in the proper sort of ath-
letics and they shpuld be Encouraged
in the laudable effort that ts being
made.
This delightfully cool and invigor-
ating breeze fresh from the north
makes a fellow feel ilke he wouldn't
object to filling his system with some
of that Pennsylvania scrapple that
Bud Weiser, of Allentown, grows so
enthusiastic about,
A man promised us yesterday that
he would surely send us a check on
account, remitting what he had. He
evidently had nothing, for we failed
to get the check.
The Leader editor had quite a com-
pliment paid him yesterday. A man
proposed to seil him a home at a
Cost of eight thousand dollars.
CONTEST GAME
L.
A resident of a city in Southwest
Texas has agreed to donate a foun-
tain to be erected in Anderson park
just as soon as a water line is ex-
tended out there to supply it with
water. Can’t the liberal minded citi-
zens of Orange chip in enough to
make it possible for the Ladies’ Civic
Club to have the water line run out
there? The fountain will be forth-
coming immediately afterward, and
it will be a good one, too.

covered a slight misunderstanding in
the details of the object of President
■ps-1-. 'Taft’s tour of the country Instead
Hml:; of being for the purpose of “Finding
out what the people need,” the Rec-
ord has discovered that it seems to
be for the purpose of “telling the
people what they need ” Quite a dif-
ference, when you come to think,
about it
“Our own Charlie Culberson will
soon be home. The fence is down,
the cows are in the corn, anti the
weeds in the patch need hoeing out
Welcome, Senator Charlie, welcome,"
exclaims the McKinney Courier-Ga-
zette. Our own Charlie seems to have
lingered in his tent almost too long
He ought to have been out long be-
fore this, fighting the battles of
Texas, instead of gum-shoeing in
Washington.
From Calcasieu lake through Bayou
Choupique, across to Conway’s bayou,
through that stream into Sabine river
is the route now being surveyed by
the United States engineering corps
for the intercoastal canal. It is a
much more feasible and desirable
route than the one originally sur-
veyed through Black’s bayou and we
trust .that this will be the route final-
ly adopted.

Congressman Randell stirred up a
veritable hornet's nest, indeed, when
he attempted to cast aspersions upon
the integrity of J C. McNealus. one
of the best known newspaper men in
Texas. In his attempt to get into
the limelight through his attack on
Senator Bailey. Randell has only suc-
ceeded in making himself ridiculous.
