Haven Canada throws for a silver medal in the UIL State Finals
BY LAUREN ZOTZ
Originally erected in 1975, the
archway that proudly stood
at the main gate of the Wind-
thorst City Park fell to its doom
on January 23, 2013. It stood
watch over individuals and
families coming and going for
nearly thirty-eight years.
The culprit, Ismael Reyes of
California, dismantled the arch-
way as he attempted to leave the
park in his rental truck through
the arched entryway. Witnesses
indicate he ran into the arch on
his first attempt to leave the park
and was stopped by the arch.
He then reversed and acceler-
ated forward through the arched
entry, knocking the arch com-
pletely off and into the roadway,
as well as tearing up the rental
truck and leaving the rearview
mirrors as additional evidence
of his negligence.
He was later located in Jacks-
boro by Jack County law en-
forcement. In the rental truck
he was stopped and found to
be intoxicated. He was taken
to the Jack County Jail and Ar-
cher County authorities were
notified. In addition to the
Jack County charges of Driving
While Intoxicated Reyes was
also charged in Archer County
with Duty Upon Striking Fixed
Object and booked on that
charge as well. It is reported
that Mr. Reyes is paying restitu-
tion for the damages at the park.
Thirty-three years after the first
archway was erected, Wayne
(Butch) Humpert, the same
man who built the original park
archway, was again given the
opportunity to build the replace-
ment arch. Humpert designed
the arch, just as he had done
in 1975 when the original arch
was erected. It took him about a
week to build the new archway,
and it was installed with the
help of Dewayne Scheffe, Mark
Scheffe, and Steve Humpert.
Ray VanBurger, Mayor of
Windthorst, stated that he was
told the original archway in
1975 was built for about $15,
the replacement costing $1,200.
“Butch painted it and it looks
really nice. We’re really proud
of it,” VanBurger said, apprecia-
tively. VanBurger also indicated
that the new arch was a bit high-
er, hopefully preventing this sort
of thing from happening again.

“It really did not sink in right

The Holliday ISD bond elec-
tion for new constmction proj-
ects and renovations of Holliday
High School passed in an ex-
tremely close election held last
Saturday. The unofficial elec-
tion results were 443 in favor
and 425 against.
Superintendent Kevin Dyes
said, “I am certainly excited that
the bond past. It was close. I
think we have a really big re-
sponsibility because it was
close, to do a really good job
of keeping the public well in-
formed of the process, just as we
did m the planning, and to make
sure the facilities meet the needs
of our students and that the com-
munity is happy when we are
done.”
One of the first steps in the
process now is the hiring of a
Manager at Risk to oversee the
building project. Dyes esti-
mates this to be a one and a half
year project that has to be care-
fully planned around the stu-
dents while they are in school.
Dyes credits the commities
that worked dilgently during the
planning process for the success
at the poles. He believes they
did a great job in thoroughly
planning what will best meet
the needs of the students and
helpied in keeping the public in-
formed of the process.
Saturday, May 18, will be the
second annual Burger Bash and
Gold Scramble, honoring Glo-
ria Klaras, the former Archer
Service Center Director from
1973-1995.
F amity and friends are work-
ing together to raise money
for the Archer Service Center,
an organization Klaras was so
devoted to. It is she who in-
troduced the center to the in-
famous riki Greek cookies that
they roll and sell weekly.
The Archer Service Cen-
ter, now under the direction of
Misty Cameron, serves Archer
City and County senior citizens
with meals at the service cen-
ter, some who would go hungry
without,them.
