Pre-Historic Elephant Unearthed
The discovery of the remains of a pre-historic elephant about
three miles east of Paducah has been the subject of
conversation around the city recently.
The discovery was made by Morgan Bayne who lives on the
farm owned by Elmer Clark.
Tusks dug up by Bayne measured ten feet in length and
approximately ten inches in diameter at the base, where it
attached to the skull.Danny Powell, a native of Paducah and
graduate geology student at Texas Tech, said the skull and rib
structure seemed to be intact, but he did not know just how
much of the skeleton has been washed away.
Powell and fellow students at Tech planned to dig up the
remains last week-end, however, over two inches of rain
Friday and Saturday prevented digging.
He estimated the remains to be approximately 15,000 to
16,000 years old, however, he said a more definite pre-historic
period could be determined after examinations and tests were
made by experts.
Powell said anthropologists and archeologists would be here
to begin excavation for further remaines around June 1. He
requests sight-seers to stay away from the area until these
officials are finished with digging and examinations. He said
remains that were above ground have now covered in order to
preserve them until Junei.
Bayne noticed a tusk-like object protruding from a creek bed
recently whilw trying to locate a shallow crossing. He dug up
the tusk and notified authorities here, who in turn requested
an examination by Texas Tech professionals.
Powell said a more complete story about this elephant or
mammoth could be told after June 1.
