First Place Westerners Will Battle Rebels Tonight
By ALAN SEARSY
Lubbock High’s league - leading
Westerners, fresh from a narrow
70-66 win over cross-town rival
Monterey, travel to Tascosa to-
night to begin the second round
action in the District 3-4A race in
an 8 p.m. game in the Tascosa
Gym.
OPENING FOR the Westerners
tonight will be Buddy Fulgham,
Larry Doyle, Joe Dobbs, Gary
Washington and either Randy
Westerburg or David Milburn.
Cowhands Face
Tascosa Bees
In Crucial Tilt
Following their 34 - 29 victory
last Tuesday over the Monterey
Lancers, the Lubbock Cowhands
travel once again to Amarillo, this
time to tangle with the Tascosa
Bees at 6:15 tonight.
OPENING FOR the Cowhands
will be Bill Green, Don Burrell,
Ronnie Shuffield, Wesley Verrier
and Jimmy Poe. Coach Don Apple
stated that Burrell was a fast im-
proving player. Continuing the
practice of giving a lot of boys
game experience, Coach Apple will
once again play several other boys.
Burrell’s jump shot in the wan-
ing minutes of the fourth quarter
gave the Cowhands a lead over the
Lancers in last Tuesday’s game
they never relinquished. At the
end of the first quarter of play
the score was 11-10 in favor of
Lubbock. Leading throughout the
first half the" Cowhands took a 14-
12 lead in at the halfway marker.
THE THIRD quarter saw Lub-
bock build up a six-point lead only
to see the Lancers put on a late
rally and finish with a 22-21 third-
quarter score. The lead changed
hands several times early in the
fourth stanza. With the score 27-
26 in favor of Monterey, Burrell
sank his clutch shot.
Poe, Keyton and Doug Dunlap
then followed with three more
baskets for the final result.
Last Friday Lubbock fell to the
Amarillo Yannigans by the score
of 64-55. Verner led the Cowhands
with 20 points and Burrell had 14
in the losing effort.

The Rebels seem to be a com-
pletely different club from the one
the Westerners beat 57-47 in their
opening district game. Tascosa’s
play seemed to improve greatly
with the addition of Pat Harkins
to the line-up. Harkins was ab-
sent from the first Lubbock-Tas-
cosa game due to his participation
as quarterback of Tascosa’s semi-
finalist football squad. Since his
return, the Rebels have knocked
off such top-rated opponents as
Plainview and Monterey. In addi-
tion to these wins, the Amarillo
school has beaten Caprock, Pampa
and Amarillo.
SLATED TO start for Tascosa
tonight are Bill Bogan (6-3), Steve
Plattor (6-1), Harkins (6-0), Ron-
nie Baker (5-7) and either Bruce
Magness (5-10) or John Bowman
(6-2).
Assistant coach Don Apple noted
that the Rebels were a fast, quick
club with several good shooters.
“They are also capable of execut-
ing the fast break and full court
press effectively.”
BOWMAN, ONE of their fastest
men, will team with Plattor, a top
rebounder, and high scoring Bo-
gan to give the Rebels a well-bal-
anced machine. Bogan has been
one of the district’s leading scor-
ers thus far.
LAST TUESDAY'S victory be-
fore a record crowd of 7,000 push-
ed the Westerners’ district record
to 7-1, and enabled them to forge
one game ahead of the Plainsmen,
who now have a 6-2 mark. It was
no easy task to beat Monterey, as
it required three overtimes before
the Lubbock supporters were able
to breathe a little easier.
Lubbock led all the way during
the regulation periods, except at
the very early stages and at the
end when the pesky Plainsmen
knotted the score at 58-all. Lub-
bock hopes were bolstered right
before the buzzer sounded ending
regulation play, however, when
Bob Schmid, the leading Plains-
man scorer with 17, fouled out.
IN THE first overtime period
Lubbock grabbed a short-lived 60-
58 lead on a jump shot by Dobbs.
The Plainsmen were quick to tie
the score and then scored again to
lead 62-60. With 37 seconds re-
maining in the period Washington
scored and was fouled. He missed
the charity toss and the first over-
time period ended 62-62.
The second overtime was only
an exchange of baskets, but it set
the stage for the third and decid-
ing extra period. Lubbock grabbed
a quick 68-64 lead. The Plains-
men were unable to overcome this
lead and after another exchange
of baskets, the Westerners had
won the hard fought battle 70-66.
WASHINGTON LED all scorers
with 21 points, but close behind
was Fulgham with 19. The senior
is currently the district’s top point
maker with 149 points. Doyle and
Dobbs each hit 13.

T~)-r Pepper presents
SOME. SHOT. . .YOU LEFT THE
IO, 2 AND A PINS STANDING.
Itls different...! like it!
It’s a good message, Harmon — 10, 2 and 4 have
always been favorite times for Dr Pepper. But any
other time does just as well, because Dr Pepper is
a completely different kind of soft drink. Not a
cola, not a root beer, it’s a happy blend of many
fruit flavors. That’s why so many people say, “It’s
different—I like it!”
You’ll say the same thing, Harmon — every time
Dr Pepper rolls your way.
