’Hands To Test Yannigans
The Cowhands trade blows with
the Amarillo Yannigans tonight
at 6:15 as they open their home
district season at Chapman Field-
house.
Last year the ’Hands downed
the AHS ‘B’ squad twice, 60-49
and 63-49.
Tuesday the local five journeyed
to Pampa to do battle with the
Shockers.
FALLING behind 16 points in
the first quarter, the ’Hands
could not overcome a strong
Plainview margin and fell to the
Bullpups 68-48 Jan. 5 at Plain-
view.
Fulgham' netted 12 points for
Lubbock, and Peace hit 10.
Failing to score in the second
overtime period, the Cowhands
fell to the Tascosa Raiders 61-57
Jan. 2 at Amarillo in their first
district outing.
THE SCORE was knotted 53-
53 at the end of the regular game
and 57-57 after one overtime. A
second extra period settled the
game. Fulgham had 24 points for
the home crew.
The locals clobbered an out-
manned Levelland “B” team 60-
32 Dec. 22 at Chapman to wind
up pre-district play.
Reaping an easy victory, the
’Hands bombed the Abilene “B”
squad 56-43 at Chapman Dec. 19.
RETALIATING for a 16-point
drubbing handed them in the
season opener, the Cowhands set
down the Odessa junior team 49-
45 here Dec. 15. Three days ear-
lier the locals blew a 22-17 half-
time lead as they fell to the Se-
minole “B” squad 38-37.

Tennis Squad Gets Ball-Boy;
Golfers Compete With MHS
-BY BOBBY MILLER
THE LHS TENNIS squad has acquired a new ball-boy, a
machine that tosses balls to players for practice on their strokes.
The new device, which cost about $400, will be used as soon as
electrical outlets are installed at the tennis courts.
Not resting on her laurels, Jill Philbrick journeyed to the
Bowl tennis tournament Dec. 28-31. The junior Lubbock
fjrst place in girls' doubles with her Ft. Worth
advanced to the finals in girls' singles before losing.

READY for season competition, Coach Jerry
rs are playing the Monterey linksters every Tues-
eather permits. Other days are spent in correct-
spects for the varsity squad are David Ratliff,
Charles Ferguson, Ronnie Paulger, and Martin
*s 9-7 record before the Plainview game is some-
what deceptive and could be much better, although 9-7 is cer-
tainly nothing to gripe about. Last year's squad had a 6-8
showing at this time.
The Westerners are somewhat of an "almost" team so far,
as six of their seven defeats have been by five points or less.
One loss, the first Odessa tilt, came in an overtime. Two con-
tests, Seminole and Abilene, have been lost at the charity line
when Lubbock sank just as many field goals as its opponent, but
both times hit less than half of its free throw attempts.
ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ledger, however, the
Westerners have copped three victories by three points or less,
two of these as revenge for earlier close losses—to Midland and
Odessa. Also, two of these were in overtime periods and tourn-
ament play—against Midland and Lamesa.
Last year six of 18 losses were by less than five points.
Two of these clashes, Abilene and Tascosa, were "almosts"
again this year.
All in all, these "too-close-for-comfort" tilts should pro-
vide useful experience for Coach Max O'Banion's cagers as
they get in the district race.

CONTINUING TO GAIN HER share of titles, Mary Rose,
junior, won the 80 meter hurdles in 13.2 seconds Jan. 1 at the
Sugar Bowl Mid-Winter Sports Carnival Track and Field Meet.
The meet, which draws nation-wide competition, is held
annually in conjunction with the Sugar Bowl football classic.
Mary is also featured in the January issue of 'Teen magazine,
which includes an action shot of the girl trackster. The story
and picture originally appeared in an issue of last year's
Westerner World.

The class 4A state football champions, the Wichita Falls
Coyotes, have been added to the Westerners' schedule for the
next two years on a home-and-home basis. Next year's tilt will
be at Lowrey Field.
EVERYBODY REACH—Play was rough and
tumble in the Caprock Holiday Basketball Tou-
rnament at Municipal Coliseum Dec. 27-30 as
the Westerners collected wins over Lamesa and
Vernon, but lost to Monterey in the finals. In

eef Finals
Gaining the finals in the Cap-
rock Holiday Tournament Dec.
27-30 at the Municipal Coliseum,
Westerner cagers downed two op-
ponents before tasting defeat at
the hands of the Monterey Plains-
men.
Two LHS representatives, Jim-
my Fullerton and Larry Christian,
were named to the division AAA-
AAAA all-tournament squad on
the basis of their overall play.
In their only defeat of the meet
the Black and Gold five were
edged by the hot-shooting Plains-
men 53-48, in the large school fi-
nals.
In the first game of the series,
the locals came from behind to
clip the Lamesa Tornadoes 59-
56 in a double overtime to move
into the winner’s bracket.
After taming the Vernon Lions
72-62 in the second tilt, the stage
was set for the LHS-MHS cross-
town battle.
Sandwiching a win between
two defeats, the Cowhands fin-
ished second in the consolation
bracket of the A-AA division in
the tournament.
In the consolation finals with
the McAdoo Eagles, the ’Hands
were ahead until the final quar-
ter, when the Eagles pulled away
to win 50-48.
In the preceeding games the
local five belted the Post Ante-
lopes 74-62 in the second game
and were outscored by the Dim-
mitt Bobcats 58-59 in the opener.
Buddy Fulgram, who was one
of the five chosen to the allj
nament team, led ’Hand
with a total of 58 points,
ed by Owen McWhortej
points.
