Cagers Compete In Odessa Tourney This Weekend
By BRUCT' CURRY
Seeking revenge for their first
loss of the season, the Westerners
met the Odessa Broncos last night
in the opening round of the Odes-
sa Tournament.
LAST TUESDAY the Broncos
dropped the Westerners from the
unbeaten ranks 64-57. Lubbock,
playing without the services of
top scorer Gary Washington, lost
the game at the free throw line.
Odessa hit 34 free throws opposed
to 21 by the local crew.
Washington sprained an ankle
minutes after the first quarter
opened and was lost for the night.
He carried a 24.7 average into
the game. Coach Max O’Banion
was hopeful that he would be able
to play in the tournament.
IF WASHINGTON is able to
play the Lubbock lineup will be
unchanged this weekend. This will
include guards Dorian Clawson
and Randy Westerburg, forwards
David Milburn and Doug Dunlap
and center Washington. O’Banion
mentioned that Wesley Verner and
Laurin Prather would also see
considerable action.
Other teams in the tournament
this year include Odessa Permian,
Midland, Odessa Ector, Palo Duro,
Thomas Jefferson of El Paso and
Bellaire of Ysleta.
LAST YEAR the Westerners en-
tered the tournament but came up
short with a lone victory over Jef-
ferson of El Paso and two losses to
Permian of Odessa and Odessa
High.

COCA-COLA BOTTLING CO. OF LUBBOCK
The loser of the Lubbock-Odessa
clash will play today; at 5:15. The
winner will play at 9:30 tonight.
OPENING round action saw
Midland meeting Thomas Jeffer-
son, Permian tackling Palo Duro
and Ector squaring off against
Bellaire. The finals are slated for
tomorrow night.
In the loss to Odessa, Wester-
burg was the leading Westerner
scorer with 17 points. He was fol-
lowed by Dunlap, who had 12, and
Milburn, with 8.
LUBBOCK trailed 18-15 at the
end of the first quarter and 33-28
at the half.
After a hot third period O’Ban-
ion’s crew narrowed the Bronco
advantage to 47-46 and tied the
game 47-47 with just ten seconds
gone in the fourth quarter.
BUT FOUL trouble cost the
Westerners dearly in the remain-
ing time as Odessa took advantage
of 11 personals to post their final
64-57 margin.

PE Classes Begin
Basketball Program
Both boys’ and girls’ PE classes
have begun basketball programs
this nine weeks. Fundamentals of
playing basketball are currently
being stressed with team play to
begin in January.
Modern Dance classes are pre-
sently working on techniques to
help them prepare for a winter
theme dance which will be pre-
sented before the Christmas holi-
days.
Five girls from the intermediate
dance class participated in the last
Children’s Theater play, “Simple
Simon.” These included Brenda
Cole, Dianna Dean, Carol Keith,
Leslie Majors and Carla Napier.
Westerners off balance throughout
much of the contest. The Odessa
crew continually switched from a
2- 1-2 to a 1-3-1, forcing Lubbock
to continually re-adjust.
The loss gave the Cowpokes a
3- 1 season mark.
LAST WEEK the Westerners
took an impressive victory over
the Big Spring Steers by the score
of 82-45 in their highest scoring
effort thus far. Lubbock controlled
the game from start to finish lead-
ing at the end of each period. Af-
ter grabing an early lead of 21-10
at the quarter, the Westerners
kept rolling strong and led at half-
time 42-23.
The third quarter found the
Lubbockites contained slightly
better as they outscored the
Steers 15-11 to lead 57-34. The
final quarter found the Westerner
reserves come through as the Lub-
bock team garnered an additional
25 points and won the contest by
37. The Westerners hit 54 percent
from the field and grabbed 75 re-
bounds.
“I WAS WELL pleased with our
bench strength during the game,”
commented O’Banion. “It was an
all around good effort by all the
boys.” The coach gave special re-
cognition to Washington for his
rebounding, Dunlap for his hot
outside shooting. Washington was
high point man with 21 tallies.
Big Spring will get another
crack at Lubbock when the two
teams meet in Lubock Coliseum
Dec. 15.
