What's That
Ingredient X
Of Gridder
'The Lubbock Westerners of
1949 have had a very successful
season. It has been the best they
have had in several years. What
has been the main factors of suc-
cess that has enabled the West-
erners to be a hard-fighting
team?
“I think the success of the West-
erners has been because of the
great student body and the co-
operation between the coaches
and the team,” stated Barry Al-
len, junior.
Jerry Jackson and Earl Die-
tering believe it is because of the
coaches and the will to win.
“I think it is because of the
coach and the skill of the foot-
ball players,” replied Jeannine
Moore, senior.
J. L. Garrison believes it is
because of determination on the
part of the players.
“I think it mostly the school
spirit, coaches, and the co-opera-
tion of the players,” responded
Erleen Nail, senior.
Allen Rosen, senior, thinks it
is because they have worked as
a team and with Coach “Pat” as
the oil, the team has run smooth-
iy.
“The main reason is because
they have scored more points
than their opponents,” replied
Richard Hitt, junior.
Pat Walker and Claudine Turn-
er, sophomore and junior respect-
ively, agree on the coaches and
the school spirit.
It is evident that there are
many views on this subject, but
whatever it may be, the general
np inion is that the Westerners are
a wonderful team.
’Hands Stomp
Bullpups 50-0
Ending their season with a bang
the Cowhands of L. H. S. stomped
Rlainview’s Bullpups 50 to 0 at
Chapman field.
Although scheduled to play ten
games in a “double-round robin,”
the Hub City boys took three
via the forfeit route, two from
Brownfield and one from Mid-
land. Of these seven games the
Cowhands won all but one, which
"they gave to Odessa 31 to 19 early
iin the season.
Bids for high scoring honors
were numerous. In the first three
places came Johnny Tatum, Bo
Sexton, and Don Jones with 44,
42, and 40 points, respectively.
Scoring 269 points to the op-
position’s 43, the Cowhands took
games from Plain view 31 to 0
?and 50 to 0; Lamesa 30 to 0 and
'59 to 0; Odessa 39 to 0; Midland
42 to 12.

[ROUND-UP
■etc
by DON HANCOCK
Recognizing the fact that the
Westerners are doing as good
or better than this column, here
comes a dangerous issue. Should
girls be escorted to their buses
by the Westerner gridmen after
a game, etc? Being of the male
species and understanding o f
male inclination should, but does
not, prejudice this columnist. If
the Westerners are to become
Texas’ best, they are going to need
supreme class in every depart-
ment . . . such as that doesn’t fig-
ure in.
The boys on ihe field may not
be thinking of anything but foot-
ball; but the boys on the bench
might let their minds wander—
“I wonder if Myrtle will let me
hold her hand on the way to the
bus?’’--just a second; then he or
they, as the case may be, is call-
ed on to go into the fracas. It’s
like a teacher asking you a ques-
tion you didn’t hear. It takes just
a second to find what the ‘score’
is, and in that second the real
may be raised a notch (six points)
in the opponents’ favor. OK, re-
porter, stick to your column, we’ll
play the football.
If the "Boys of ’49" maintain a
grim, fist-clenched, teeth-gritted
determination to become the best
states best, they will.
"Our Boys” were slated to trav-
el early this morning. Their line-
up, with the exception of Freddie
Gray and possibly “Skinny”
Brock, will be back to early sea-
son status.
Former Westerner athletes,
getting together here over the
Thanksgiving holidays, ridiculed,
in a playful manner, each other’s
schools. Texas, T. C. U. and S. M.
U. were highly represented note:
Petersburg Drops Pioneers;
Locals Bat .500 This Season
Winning four, losing four, and burg.
tieing one, the Pioneers of Lub-
bock Senior High ended the sea-
son with a .500 average last
Thursday when they took a 12 to
7 defeat at the hands of Peters-
Athletes are not restricted to
boys.
After learning the outcome of
the Fort Worth coin flip, this re-
porter became firmly convinced of
the evils of gambling.
In the course of the season the
Pioneers dropped Wolforth, 32 to
0; Littlefiled, 31 to 12; Plainview,
21 to 0; and Ropesville, 26 to 12.
Defeats were handed to the Pio-
neers by Meadow, 12 to 0; Lev-
elland, 12 to 7; Littlefield 18 to
12; and Petersburg 12 to 7. The
only deadlock was a 13 to 13 tie
with Plainview.
The Pioneers scored 150 points
to the opponents’ 91.
