Westerners Battle Rebels In Second Round Opener
By BRUCE CURRY
Beginning the second round of
district action, the Westerners
travel to meet the Tascosa Rebels
in Amarillo Friday night. Game-
time is 7:30 p.m.
"TASCOSA HAS greatly im-
proved over the first time we play-
ed them,” said Coach Max O’Ban-
ion. “This is particularly true on
the boards as this Evans boy (Ron-
nie, 6-6) is really coming through.”
Evans had just come out from
football practice when Lubbock
and the Rebs battled last time and
has gained much ability.
"ALSO, THEIR outside shooting
has improved from what we have
seen,” added the coach. “With a
new coach they have been having
to install a new system which has
been taking time. This is probably
one reason they have been a little
late in improving.”
Starting for the Rebels will be Ronnie Shuffield (6-1) and Don

it's different...! like it!
It’s a good message, Harmon — 10, 2 and 4 have always
been favorite times for Dr Pepper. But any other
time does just as well, because Dr Pepper
is a completely different kind of soft drink.
Not a cola, not a root beer, it’s a happy
blend of many fruit flavors.
That’s why so many people say,
“It’s different — I like it!”
You’ll say it, too, Harmon - every Hfe,
time Dr Pepper rolls your way.

and John Burkhalter (6-10).
"THEY RUN a single post of-
fense in general,” said Coach
O’Banion about the northern foe.
“There defense changes as they
run both zone and man-to-man.”
In their first meeting this year,
Lubbock came out on top of the
Tascosa five 42-38 in the Coliseum.
FIVE OF Lubbock’s “starting
six” will begin the game Friday.
These include guards Freddy Dick-
son (6-0) and Jimmy Poe (5-9),
forwards Wesley Verner (6-1),
Burrell (6-2). Bill Green (6-5) will
start at the center position.

Gym Sessions
Cap Workouts
The sounds of balls popping
leather fill the boys’ gym every
weekday afternoon as the Western-
er baseball team gets into its pre-
season work.
"WE ARE still concentrating on
conditioning and getting our arms
in good shape,” said baseball coach
Earl Parker, “Seventh period we
work on conditioning and then we
work after school for about an
hour on throwing, fielding and
hitting in the school gym. We
are working in the gym pri-
marily because of the weather. As
for throwing, the boys arms will
be better for having worked inside
before getting outside.” Over the
holidays the boys worked out on
their own.
The conditioning schedule in-
cludes such drills as “goof-ball.”
In this drill, which stresses sprint-
ing and fielding, a player has to
field two balls thrown in opposite
directions by the coach. This and
other drills will be continued until
about a week before the start of
the district season. By that time
the boys should be in shape which
will keep them in good condition.
THE FIRST season game will
be with Odessa on March 5. There
will be several intersquad scrim-
mages before that time, but no
inter-school scrimmages are for-
seen. The first district game will
be with Pampa on April 8. Team
captains, selected last spring, are
Chris Cox and Joe Mack Tilson.
“It seems as if we have a good
work attitude,” concluded Coach
Parker. “We are further along con-
dition-wise than we have been at
this time the last few years. We
still need baseball players — soph-
omores and juniors who could help
the program and who think they
can pitch or catch.”
