New Book Pays Tribute
To 1939 Lubbock Coach
-- BY ALAN SEARSY -
In Autumn's Mightiest Legions, a history of Texas school-
boy football just recently received by the school library, some
interesting glimpses into the past fooball fortunes of Lubbock
High School are presented.
PERHAPS THE most stirring reference to a Westerner
team comes in Chapter XXII, "Death Writes the Story." The
year was 1939, and the Westerners, coached by Weldon Chap-
man, got off to a mediocre start—1-3-1 in non-conference
play. Coach Chapman became ill as Lubbock was preparing
to open the district campaign against Pampa. With luck the
Westerners beat the Harvesters 6-0, but by the next game,
which was to be played at Borger, Chapman was placed in the
hospital. Assistant Coach J. G. Keyes took over the head
coaching duties. Lubbock went on to smash Borger 40-0.
Plainview was next. From his hospital bed, the ailing
Chapman listened on the radio as his team won 19-0. They
said he smiled when the final score came—smiled and died.
Lubbock finished out the remainder of the district race
with a hard won victory over a favored Amarillo squad, win-
ning 9-7; and advanced to the state playoffs. They beat Electro
20-0, and then upset Sweetwater 6-0. In the semi-finals the
Westerners again surprised everyone by beating Woodrow Wil-
son of Dallas 21-0.
ALAN
THEN CAME the showdown clash for the
state crown—Waco and Lubbock met in the
Cotton Bowl before 21,000 fans. At the half
Lubbock cheerleaders paraded on the field and
spelled out "Chap," a stirring tribute to their
former coach. Heading into the final stanza
Waco led 14-13, but the crowd was electrified
as Westerner Howard Alford raced 38 yards
for the winning score, perhaps the most dra-
matic score in Texas schoolboy football history.
Chapman had coached many years but
never won a championship—until his West-
erners gave it to him after death.

BY WALLOPING the Westerners 39-7 last Friday night,
the Borger Bulldogs strengthened their hold on a share of the
top rung in the District 3-4A standings. Standing between
Borger and the district championship is undefeated Amarillo
Tascosa, open last week, with a 5-0 mark. The crucial tilt
comes Nov. 15.
The Westerners are all but eliminated from the district
championship race. With a 2-2 record against conference foes
Lubbock has lost to both leaders. Last week against the Bull-
dogs the Westerners were undble to get started and what was
expected to be a fairly close contest turned into a rout. Lub-
bock was never in the game and finally got its lone touchdown
with a 2:59 remaining in the third period when the Bulldogs
owned a 33-point bulge.
Borger just seemed to do everything right and nothing
wrong. The north Panhandle team amassed 507 total yardage
and held the Westerners to 190. Neil Bearden did the most
damage to the Lubbock defense. Bearden gained 209 yards,
19 yards more than the complete Westerner offense was able
to collect.
COACH CARL SPOONEMORE noted that the Westerner
blocking and tackling looked poor, and that the defensive play
was not up to par. Lubbock now ranks fourth in the district
standings and has four remaining games. The Westerners
still must face Pampa, Plainview, Amarillo and Monterey. Idle
tonight, the Black and Gold will host Pampa next Friday.

Cowhands Will Battle Palo Duro
Lubbock’s Cowhands will travel
to Amarillo Thursday to play the
Palo Duro Chicos at 4 p.m. With
only three games left, and no hope
for winning district, the Cowhands
are concentrating on team work
and attempting to gain much
needed experience.
"LAST YEAR, we lost to Palo
Duro 6-0 and Thursday we are
hoping to even the record. Due to
the loss to the Chicos last season,
we finished second in district,”
comments Coach Bob McGuire.
Before yesterday’s game with
Borger, the future Westerners
were sporting a 3-2 season slate
and a 2-2 district record.
PROBABLE offensive starters
are jeft end Bo Boren, right end
David Pirtle, left tackle Joe
Horne, right tackle Ted Ratcliff,
left guard John Followill, right
guard Richard Barrett and center
Mike Wallace.
The backfield will be composed
of quarterback Robby Layne, half-
backs Roger Reeves and Bob
Knowles, and fullback Joe Mac
Tilson.
THE PROBABLE defensive
starters are ends Charles Evans
and Boren, tackles Horne and Pirt-
le, middle guard Ted Lewis, line-
backers Followill and Wallace or
Barrett, cornerbacks Layne and
Tilson and halfbacks Ray Aguirre
and Darrell Hurst.
“Last week, Palo Duro was
beaten by Borger,” comments
Coach Earl Parker, “and they will
be keyed up for our game. They
have a pretty fine team although
their 2-4 record doesn’t show it.”
"THIS PAST week was our op-
en one and I’m not especially
pleased with our workouts,” stated
Coach Parker. “Tilson and Layne
have been the only bright spots in
these sessions.”
