On their recent trip to
Lowery Field this past Fri-
day, Lubbock lost 8-2 to
Monterey. The sluggers
played a tough game, but
came up short in the end.
Monterey jumped out to a
5-0 lead in the 2nd inning on
a few unearned runs. The
Westerners cut this lead by
two when Ranee O’Brien
knocked in Alvin Hargers
with a single to left. Then
Steve Wilton’s grounder
could not be handled at third
allowing Mike Narvaiz to
score and cut Monterey’s
lead to 5-2. Monterey pound-
ed out three more runs to
make it 8-2. The loss drop-
ped Lubbock to second
place in district standing.
Ranee O’Brien said, “The
game wasn’t as bad as the
score indicated. Monterey
got a lot of unearned runs.”

Toughest sport" begins trainiru
Striving for victory, Patricia
Welch races for the finish line.
“It is the toughest sport in
the world to train for. There
is no guarantee of improve-
ment.” — Coach Lehnen,
March 24, 1985
What sport is the above
quote referring to? In foot-
ball, the participants butt
heads with semi mobile ob-
jects like blocking sleds, for
3 hours a day, 5 days a week,
with no guarantee of gold
and glory; just ask the Texas
Tech Red Raiders.
Basketball players loft air-
filled, rubber bladders at
tiny, orange hoops for hours
on end. It can become
monotomous after a time
but there are no locks on
NBA rosters. All the jump
shots in the world couldn’t
transform me into Michael
Jordan.
So what sport is the
toughest to train for? In the
opinion of LHS coach
Lehnen, it’s track. “All you
do in track is run, run, run,”
contributed Lehnen . “You
may or may not improve.”
Some may not improve,
but according to Lehnen,
the Lubbock High thinclads
have. “This particular group
(LHS track team) has really
improved from day to day.
“The Westerners finished
5th out of 8 teams in the Lub-
bock City Invitational, 9th
out of 17 in the West Texas
Relays, 5th out of 5 in the
Lubbock City Meet and 7th
out of 7 in the Hobbs Invita-
tiona.
Unlike football and many
other high school sports, the
track teams compete a-
gainst schools all across
West Texas and parts of
Eastern New Mexico, not
just District 3-5A. Said
coach Lehnen , “The com-
petition is real divided, but
Estacado and Dunbar are
the strongest teams overall.
Every school has outstand-
ing individuals, we’ve got
the best half miler in the
area.”
Coach Lehnen, who is in
his first year, makes no wild
predictions of unprece-
dented success. Instead, he
says the team could very
well place individuals in five
events at the regional track
meet. To qualify for re-
gional, a participant must
place 1st or 2nd at the
district meet. Lehnen sees
Manuel Garcia in the 800
meters, Jeff Coffman in the
200 meters, Israel Gonzales
in the 3200 meters and the
1600 meter relay team of
Garcia, Lee Ranson, James
Horton and Coffman as defi-
nite threats for district
honors.
The following individuals
are major contributors to the
team, according to Lehnen :
Manuel Garcia, Israel Gon-
zales, Jeff Coffman, Toby
Christian, Troy Schiermeyer,
Berry Craddock, Jerry
Moore, Vince Johnson, Lee
Ransom, Fabian Chavez and
James Horton.

“Both teams handled

ly,” said Mrs. Borchardt.
“We actually left Hobbs
thinking we (the boys team)
had placed 3rd.” There was
only 6/10 (.6) difference bet-
ween 1st, 2nd and 3rd, but
they were using a computer
for scoring and it had made
some mistakes, so when the
score was rechecked, Lub-
bock High won by 1.25. This
was an important victory for
us because we wanted
Hobbs that we were the bet-
ter competing.teams.”
