Tuesday before last from 12:30
to 1 o’clock the Intramural Bas-
ketball championship was being
decided—and 244 decided it with
a 23 to 19 scoreboard show.
Tall Bob “Cowboy” Wassom
sank five out of seven free throws
and hit a field goal for seven
points and scoring honors.
Merle Winford, Jack McClarty,
and Don Hudgeons were runner-
ups with six marks each. Over 300
boys participated in the tourney.
45 homerooms also entered the
tourney, leaving only two out.'37
rooms entered last year.
Principal Floyd Honey and
Marlin R. “Shorty” Hayhurst,
physical education co-ordinator,
co-operated whole-heartedly in
the tourney.
•
Making a quick switch, Sonny
Mobley of Odessa took high point
honors at Big Spring with seven
and one-half marks. Alfred Adair,
Westerner, was runner-up with
seven and three-fourths. (This is
not a misprint.)
•
Making a switch quick, here’s a
few fast words. Don Decker and
Charlie Williams are three-year
lettermen in track. Danny Boone,
a sophomore, may follow in their
footsteps.
Many towns in the United
States have baseball names such
as Baseline, Michigan; Ball
Grounds, Georgia; Umpire, Ark-
ansas; Pitcher, Minnesota; and
Centerfield, Utah.
•
Tip O’Niel batted .492 for the
St. Louis American Association
team, making 277 hits in 123!
games in 1887.
Williams Elected
Co-Captain For
Second Year
Charlie Williams, co-captain
elect of 1949 Westerner cinder
squad, is a veteran in the roll.
Lettering in track as a sopho-
more, Charlie was elected to co-
captainship for his junior year.
But since Charlie will be able to
“stay over” another year, he is
still a junior.
Recognized as one of the fore-
most sprinters on the Black and
Gold squad, he should qualify to-
morrow for the Regional meet 2
weeks later. He has been inacti-
vated by doctor’s orders for the 2
weeks previous to this one due to
a pulled muscle.
Charlie excels in the 100-yard
dash, the 220-yard dash, and the
broad jump as well as in football.
Last year Charlie once ran the
440 against Jim Johnson, Wester-
ner who ran the 440 in 52 seconds.
It resulted in a win for Jim but by
inches.
Next year Charlie can be assur-
ed of a major roll on the Wester-
ner football squad.

Last Saturday at Big Spring the

points. Odessa was first with 34
and one-half. Abilene took second
with 31.
Alfred Adair and W. J. Blake

tied also.
Donald Decker took first in the
220 in 23.4 as well as third in the
100.

inches to take first place in the
Interscholastic league fever
seems to be in the air. Both vol-
leyball and tennis are rounding
out their teams toward the final
clash for Interscholastic league
honor.
In tennis the senior girl's dou-
bles, Donna Hall and Joan Bolin-
ger, will tangle with Brownfield
today at one o'clock on the Texas
Tech courts. Nancy Dealy, senior
girl's singles, will meet Plainview
at the same place.
Mr. D. C. Heath reports that
Idalou, district B. champions, re-
ceived a licking at the hands of
Joan and Donna, girl’s doubles,
and David Clark, senior boy’s
singles^ Thursday before last.
At the time we go to press it is
not known whether or not Idalou
evened the score against Lub-
bock’s teams when they were
here this week.

took third in that event.
Adair tied for second in the
high jump at 5 feet 9 inches. He
also copped fourth in the discus
to raise his total to 7 and three
fourths points and high point hon-
ors.
With these boys in competition
less stiff the Westerners are ex-
pected to walk off with the Dis-
trict meet.
Eddie Goetze will be a strong
contender in the 440. Ray Thorn-
ton will probably make a showing.
Wayne Stroud and Charlie Wil-
liams are expected to strengthen
the 440 relay squad by their re-
coveries from influenza and shin-
splints, respectively.
