Westerners Attack Bulldogs At Coliseum Tonight
By BRUCE CURRY
Trying to recapture some of
their lost prestige, the Western-
ers battle the Borger Bulldogs to-
night in Lubbock for their third
loop encounter. Game time is *1
p. m.
"BORGER is a team that can
knock off any team on any given
night,” commented Coach Max
O’Bapion. The Bulldogs invade the
Coliseum with five starting letter-
men. They are Byron Hanna, 5-9;
Dale Dawson, 6-2; Tillmon. 5-11;
Jerry Cooper, 6-4, a returning
starter; and Keith Pettigrew, 6-1,
or Joe Barron, 6-1. “Borger, as
usual, has a good shooting team
—especially Cooper and Dawson,”
said O’Banion. “Hanna and Till-
mon are fast and good ball hand-
lers. Barron can be remembered
for playing as an end this past
season.”
The Westerners will send basic-
ally the same group to start. They
are Dorian Clawson, 5-10, and
Randy Westerburg, 6-1, at guards:
David Milburn, 6-3, and Doug
Dunlap, 6-4, at forwards; and cen-
ter Gary Washington, 6-5. Wesley
Verner, 6-1, could possibly find a
starting slot also.
IN NON-DISTRICT action Tues-
day, the Westerners downed a
scrappy Big Spring team 68-45
with the aid of 30 free throws.
During the foul ridden affair, 47
miscues were called—the majority
against the Steers.
The early part of the game was
a close battle with the first quar-
ter ending deadlocked at 12 - 12.
Halfway through the second peri-
od the score was tied 20-20 before
Lubbock finally caught fire and
went to the dressing room with a
32-24 bulge. The second half was
more in the Westerners’ favor as
they beat the Steers 36-21.
AFTER GRABBING a 38-28 lead
in the third stanza, the Westerners
started pulling far ahead. In the
final period Lubbock hit only two
field goals but cashed in on 16 of
20 charity tosses to end the game.
High point man for the Western-
ers was Washington with 18 points
while Big Springs’ Simon Terra-
zas had 10. No one else on either
squad hit double figures.
"THIS WEEK we have been
working particularly on our de-
fense in practice and better exe-
cution of our offense,” added the
coach.

Monterey on their home court last
week 60-42.
THE PROBABLE starters for
the Cowhands will be guards Tom-
my Keeton and Tommy Mattison,
forwards Don Burrell and Gary

Steward, and center Nello Arm-
strong. Gary Doyle and Joel Hay-
hurst will also see action.
Last Tuesday the Cowhands ran
over the Big Spring “B” team 56
to 35. Burrell and Armstrong led
in scoring again with Burrell hav-
ing his best day piling up 23
points. Armstrong was the closest
to him with 10 while Key ton and
Steward got 8 each.
BURRELL ALSO led in rebound-
ing with 10 while Key ton also did
well on defense. Lubbock took
control from the first building up
a 22 to 6 first quarter lead and
stretching it each quarter to the
final 56 to 35 score.
“We expect a difficult time with
Borger,” stated Coach Don Apple.
“We feel like we have given ex-
tremely good effort in the first
two district games, especially
against Pampa in the defensive
and rebounding phases of the
game. We feel like the boys are
progressing to the point that they
are satisfied with nothing less than
their best effort. They particularly
strive for excellence in defense
and rebounding and feel like the
scoring will come with tremendous
efforts in these two phases.”
LUBBOCK WON their first two
outings over Tascosa and Pampa.
Armstrong and Burrell led the
scoring with 18 and 16 points re-
spectively as the Hands downed
Tascosa 63-51. In Pampa they just
changed position with Burrell get-
ting 15 points for top honors and
Armstrong close behind with 12.
The Cowhands held the Shockers
for 14 points in the last half to de-
feat the Northern District foe
61-34.
