Banquet continues despite problems
The All-Sports Banquet will be held this year contrary to what
many athletes now believe. The banquet will be limited to varsity
athletes and their parents. Although the traditional banquet is
usually held at the Civic Center it will be held in the school cafeteria
this year because of financial concern. However there are many
instances throughout the country in which school districts do not
have any extra-curricular activities. The extra-curricular activities
include athletics which means that as there are no athletics there is
also no sports banquet. I believe Lubbock High athletes should be
thankful that there will be a banquet even though it is not what they
expected it to be.
Lubbock High athletes and parents will be asked to bring covered
dish dinners in order to continue with the annual athletic banquet.
The banquet will consist of the coaches speaking in praise of
outstanding athletes (and those of us who struggled). Some of the
awards given out include The Big Stick Award for baseball and ofher
awards for basketball, track, and volleyball. The banquet should,
with all concern and cooperation involved, turn out to be a success.
All varsity athletes and parents are strongly urged to attend this
awaited occassion on May 10th.
I hope that every Lubbock High varsity athlete will be at the
banquet to give thanks for what we do have (which is pride in our
athletic program) and not stay at home and criticize the fact that it is
not what the expected. Hopefully Lubbock High students will
continue to behave in a true Westerner manner.

Dogs paw past Westerners in
district baseball competition
Rob Buffa and his Lubbock
Westerner baseball team were
looking once again to play the
spoiler’s role against the Plain-
view Bulldogs, but those hungry
hounds had other plans in mind in
defeating Lubbock, 13-4.
The Westerners would have
liked nothing better than to play
giant killer once again. The
previous week Lubbock knocked
off the Coronado Mustangs, who
were then tied for the district 3-5A
lead with Monterey. Plainview
has since moved into a tie for first
place with the Plainsmen and the
Mustangs have slipped to second
place.
But the Westerners were sent
reeling against the Bulldogs when
Plainview exploded for six runs in
the sixth inning, breaking open a
tight ball game.
Jerry Perez was the losing
pitcher and his defense was
tagged with five errors on the day.
His record dips to 3-5 for the
entire season.
Perez did aid his own cause by
driving in 2 runs with a double,
but Plainview’s offense and overall
consistency outdistanced the
Westerners.

Cindermen place in meet
On April 16th, the boys track
team competed at the South Plains
College Invitational in Levelland.
The team competed against Mid-
land Lee, Coronado, Hobbs, Here-
ford, and Monterey.
Bryan Ivey, Robert Uruttia,
Manuel Gomez and Jeff Coffman
formed the 1600 meter relay team
and placed fourth with a time of
3:36.48.
Bobby Lemmond, Jeff Coffman,
Bryan ivey, and Robert Uruttia
comprised the 400 meter relay and
placed fourth as well.
In the pole vault division Bobby
Lemmond received a third place
honor.
Our boys will be competing next
in a district meet which is to be
held in Amarillo on April 23.
