What with the shortage scandle
in the Hardin County Clerk's office
being the main topic of conversa-
tion, pcrplc in Silsbee last week
were proud that thp city govern-
ment lias an annual audit by an out-
side auditor. There were no dis-
crepancies in the city books... Peo-
ple were saying that if the county
had a like policy, the, Clarence
McNcely mess would not cover such
a long period of time... An outside
audit is a usual thing where therrj
is clean government, but when the
books are not clean, you hear all
sorts of arguments against it.. .Our
Courthouse Clique claims that an
outside audit,like voting machines,
cost too much money and we can't
afford it...We did not know how
right they were. We didn't know
that there was a shortage in the
funds...And we still don't know
how much the shortage was and if
it involved more than die Probate
funds,. .Can't you hear the Clique
if they could just figure out a way
to blame this on Willie Bean.. .R. L.
Paret, chairman of the Beautifica-
tion Committee has began to lay
the groundwork for "Spruce - Up
Silsbee Week" which will be held
the week of October 24th through
October 30th. In a recent letter to
Chamber members lie asked for in-
dividual and group effort in the
drive... Siisbee's Diane Stevens,
Miss Silsbee, who is a freshman at
the University of Texas, represent-
ed the City at the Calv-Oil-Cadc
in Port Arthur last week... Things
were about to come to a halt with
the Beaumont Fair'going on and
then the opening of the 1965 Squir-
rel Season... The City Police are
still cracking down on traffic vio-
lators in Silsbee, September arrests
totaled 114 as aga inst 94 in Aiigust.,,
