There are two interesting astro-
nomical events that we can witness
with a little effort this coming week.
Both occur only very infrequently,
possibly oncc-in-a-lifetime-happen-
ings.
The first is the "Transit of Mer-
cury". Mercury is the closest planet
to the sun. Most people have never
seen Mercury, even though it is vis-
ible regularly in the predawn or post
sunset sky. Mercury remains close
to the sun in its orbit so you can
imagine that it is attached to the sun
(as we all are, in a way). When the
sun sets, Mercury goes with it very
soon after sunset and likewise, rises
just before the sun does. During the

Astronomical Society will be stag-
ing a viewing event. Mercury will
first contact the Sun's disc at 3:11
p.m. on the afternoon of Nov. 15
(first contact). It
will be fully "in-
side" the sun at
3:22 p.m. (sec-
ond contact),
will be at its
greatest distance
inside the sun at
3:41 p.m., start
to emerge at 3:58
p.m. (third con-
tact), and will
last touch the
sun at 4:10 p.m.
(fourth contact).
At all times it
will be very close to the sun's rim.
The last time a transit of Mer-
cury was visible from the U.S. was
26 years ago. Since then, such
progress has been made with video
imaging that astronomers expect to
be able to see the transit phenom-
ena in such detail as has never been
possible before!
Two days later, another rare event
will occur. This one will be easier
to see for everyone willing to try. It
is the Leonid Meteor shower, hut it
is possible that this year, the shower
will he a storm of such magnitude
that one might see a thousand or
more "shooting stars" every hour.
The problem is that astronomers
can forecast a transit with consid-
erable accuracy, but cannot do the
same for a meteor storm. Without
going into great detail, the Leonid
meteor shower occuts annually and
numbers of meteors can be seen
emanating from the constellation
Leo, the Lion. The showers occur
w hen the earth intersects the orbit
of a comet known as "Tempel-
Tuttle". Comet Tempel-Tuttle or-
bits the sun on a 33-year cycle in a
typical elongated trajectory, coming
close to earth at 33-year intervals,
and then zooming off into space
again. It leaves dust and ice par-
ticles in its orbit as it approaches
the sun. Tempel-Tuttle is a compara-
tively young comet (the Leonids
were first recorded in the 10th Cen-
tury AD,) hence the debris is
clumped around its orbit, still com-
paratively close to the comet itself.
Other well-known meteor showers,
like the Perseids, are more easily
predicted because their cometary
material is spread evenly around the
comets' orbits. In 1833, 100,000
Leonid meteors were observed per
hour. In 1966, the number was
150,000! Some Astronomers think
that 1999 could he a repeat of 1966,
others think it will be a bust. I'm
optimistic. The 1999 Leonids will
appear on the night of Nov. 17-18
(Wednesday/Thursday). So after
midnight on Nov. 17, head for the
beach with a reclining chair, some
warm clothes, a flask of something
hot to drink, and find a nice dark
spot. Then hope that the meteors
will be a storm rather than a shower.
Also, a clear night is needed for both
events. Let's hope we haven't run
out of clear skies by then.

Texas Marine Science Institute.
