Iinjuries too severe
Loggerhead dies at UTMSI
Turtle treatment
Veterinarian Mark Quade of the Island Animal Clinic beg-
ins surgery on a loggerhead turtle. The injured turtle was
found by some snorkelers at Malaquite Beach on the Padre
Island National Seashore. The loggerhead’s limb had been
severed by a boat propellor. (Staff photo by Murray Judson)
Efforts to save a turtle that was
found ii\jured at Padre Island Nation-
al Seashore failed Tuesday.
A loggerhead turtle, Caretta
caretta, was found last Friday by
some snorkelers at Malaquite
Beach.
According to Tony Amos, an ocean -
ographer at the University of Texas
Marine Science Institute here, the
skin divers reported that the turtle
was “swimming strangely.”
Some park rangers put the turtle
in a tub and brought it to the
marine lab, where its injuries were
assessed.
The turtle's right front limb (flip-
per) had been severed, most likely
by a boat propellor. The turtle also
had a cut on its head.
Veterinarians Floyd Garrett and
Mark Quade of the Island Animal
Clinic performed an operation on
the animal Monday to put a stain-
less steel pin in the limb.
The turtle died Tuesday after-
noon in a holding tank at the Insti-
tute.
Amos said the turtle died from its
injuries.
“They are very sensitive to pain,"
said Amos, who outlined some of.
the turtle’s other characteristics.
The loggerhead eats mollusks
and crabs, but can go for extended
periods without food because it has
a very slow metabolism.
“It’s typical for them to be cov-
ered with barnacles because they’re
slow moving," Amos added. “They
spend mor time on the bottom than
most other turtles. Whenever you
find a turtle with a lot of barnacles,
it’s most invariably a loggerhead."
The turtle will be kept at the
Institute, where it will be analyzed
later in a necropsy.

Lots of stings reported
Man-o-war plague beachgoers
Lifeguards, park rangers and
EMS personnel were kept busy over
the weekend with a rash of man-o-
war sting victims.
“I don’t know what happened. It
just went berserk,” said Chris Law-
rence, administrative aide to Pre-
cinct 4 County Commissioner J.P.
Luby.
Lawrence, who is also a para-
medic, was among those rendering
aid to more than 100 victims of the

“Eighteen lifeguard stands
worked 120 incidents on Saturday
alone,” said Lawrence. “To put that
into perspective, only 350 incidents
were were reported in all of 1984.
That’s the busiest I’ve ever seen.”
“I have seen worse," said John
Smerdon, supervisor of Port Aran-
sas Park for the Nueces County
Parks and Recreation Department.
The park ranger station' just
north of Horace Caldwell Pier
treated 43 man-o-war victims Fri-
day through Sunday.
“For some reason they all rolled
in here at once," said Smerdon.
“I was running like a chicken with
my head cut off,” said Lawrence.
Lawrence said Nueces County life-
guards treated 12 cases at Sand-
castle Drive; five cases at Avenue G;
11 cases at Beach Street; five cases
near the park ranger station; and
four cases just south of the North
Jetties. The remainder of the 120
cases were treated at 13 lifeguard
stations on North Padre Island.
Port Aransas EMS personnel
treated more than 15 victims, as
well.
After scraping the tentacles from
the skin, relief from man-o-war
stings can be obtained by making a
paste of alcohol and unseasoned
meat tenderizer and applying it to
the sting.
