Just horsin' around
The best way to get around on local beaches in the middle of the record-setting Spring
Break crowds seen here in recent weeks, besides your own two feet, would seem to be a
horse. It would help if your mount wasn’t falling-down drunk like most of the other
Spring Breakers. Actually, the horse in this photo was jumping to its feet after a roll in the
sand, another favorite activity of the Spring Breakers. (Staff photo by Murray Judson)

PORT ARANSAS SOUTH J£TTY
Spring Break crush
topples ferry record
The Port Aransas ferry system
set a record during the biggest week
end of Spring Break, Match 21-2.1,
but ferry traffic for last weekend,
March 28-30, was substantially
lighter
According to figures compiled in
the local ferry office by Isabel Riv-
era, a total of 24,82*) vehicles were
transported across the Corpus
Christi Ship Channel during tin*
March 21 23 weekend.
I sing Texas Department of High
ways and Public Transportation
estimat ions t hat an average of three
persons ride in each vehicle, added
to the 837 pedestrian walk-ons
recorded during t he same weekend,
72,915 visitors arrived on Mustang
Island during the two day period
via ferry.
However, because many Spring
Breakers often arrive in carloads of
more t han t hree, t he state est imate
may be conservative.
During Easter weekend, the final
weekend of Spring Break 1986,
21,449 vehicles utilized the ferries.
I smg t he same estimate formula,
added to 670 walk ons, the state
tally of persons arriving during last
weekend would be 65,017.
Mrs Rivera said the March 21 23
toiills represent a record for the
ferry system, although she was
unsure when the previous record
was established
The ferry system’s six nine-car
ferry boats all wen* in operation 24
hours a day during the peak traffic
periods of Spring Break.
Here is a day by day breakdown
of ferry traffic, by number of velii
ties, for the last two weekends:
Friday, March 21 — Arrivals
4,064; departures, 2,703.
Saturday, March 22 — Arrivals,
4,770; departures, 3,809
Sunday, March 23 — Arrivals,
3,802, departures, 4 752.
Friday, March 28 — Arrivals,
3,989; departures. 3,691.
Saturday, March 29 — Arrivals.
3,661; departures. 3,903
Sunday, March 30 — Arrivals,
2.182: departures, 3,963.
