Research activities by scientists
from the University of Texas Marine
Science Institute (UTMSI) in Port
Aransas will discuss their activities
in Texas and around the world dur-
ing an Evening Lecture Series.
The series, designed specifically
for the non-scientist public, will kick
off tonight when Dr. Paul Montagna
presents a talk called “Environmen-
tal Flows: Water Run to Waste?”
The talk will begin at 7 p.m. in the
UTMSI Visitor Center Auditorium
where doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
The session is free and open to
the public.
According to Montagna, fresh
water is a limited resource in many
parts of Texas and the nation as a
whole. Freshwater allocation is gen-
erally reserved for agricultural, in-
dustrial and municipal purposes.
Recently, the ecological need for
freshwater inflow's to estuaries has
also been recognized and imple-
mented. This allocation has caused
conflict in South Texas, where wa-
ter is scarce and droughts are com-
mon. Yet, freshwater inflow is im-
portant to the bay health.

"The seminar is designed to give
residents (long-time and recent) a
better understanding of the unique
area in which we live,” Tarkington
said.

The EMS Auxiliary’s Resale shop
is always appreciative of donations
of good, clean merchandise that can
be resold.
Proceeds from the shop, located in
Suite 6 at 520 N. Cut-off Road, help
buy equipment for the Port Aransas
Emergency Medical Services.
However, lately some people have
left big, unusable items outside when
the shop is closed. If people leave
mattresses or upholstered furniture
outside the shop and it rains, the
donated items cannot be used or
ter next to Community Presbyterian
Church.
At meetings, those attending read
their work, share encouragement
and make suggestions, according to
organizer Cerry Wettersten.
For additional information about the
group, call Wettersten at 749-6693.
