Seventeen world-class master sand sculf
tors from the United States, Canada and a
far away as Wales will be in Port Aransa
this weekend for the seventh annual Texa
Sand Sculpture Festival (SandFest).
The event will be held Friday through
Sunday on the beach at Marker 9, one mile
south nf Horace Caldwell Pier.
In addition to the masters’ division, pro
amateur, amateur and youth divisions will
be held.
Entry fees in the pro-am division, ama
teur and masters' divisions are a donatiot
to the Port Aransas Community Theatn
(PACT), a non-profit organization that spot)
sors SandFest.
In addition to watching the sand sculp
tors at work, attendees may enjoy live en
tertainment, visit food, beverage, art, crafts
and jewelry booths, and participate in a
variety of other activities. A complete sched
ule of events can be found elsewhere in thi*
issue of the South Jetty.
A raffle will be held throughout the event
with proceeds benefiting PACT. Raff le tick-
ets for a variety of gifts and merchandise
will he sold by volunteers who have been
invited to “create general havoc” in orde-
to boost ticket sales, lo donate a tax d<
ductihle raffle prize, call Janync Sansom at
7490070.
The festival also w ill feature an arnau
photography contest. Entry forms may he
picked tip at the Sand Castle Central Tent.

The forum for candidates in contested
races will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the council
chambers at Port Aransas City Hall.
Candidates in contested races for school
board and city council are asked to meet in
the council chambers at 5 p.m. At that time
candidates will draw for questions.
Each candidate will he allowed five min-
utes in which to make an opening statement
and five minutes to make a closing State-
ment. The statements should he typewrit-
ten and presented to the moderator, South
Jetty editor Mary Judson, prior to the start
of the event.

Michael Schindle of San Antonio recently caught, tagged and released this short-fin mako shark that weighed about 650
pounds and was 10.5 feet long. He caught her 'somewhere in the southern Gulf.' Officials at the National Marine Fisheries
Institute, where Schindle sent the tag information, said it was the largest mako they had ever heard about. However, last
year, Schindle's brother, Jeff, caught a mako that tipped the scales at 707.5 pounds, a state record. Schindle said they
caught and released several makos that day, the smallest weighing about 300 pounds. Their season's catch numbers an
even dozen, all of which they have tagged and released.
