Lifetime Achievement Award
received by Marjorie Blackard
By Carolyn Richards
South Jetty reporter
Marjorie Blackard, a retired FV>rt
Aransas teacher, and the pioneer
Brundrett family were recognized
with Lifetime Achievement Awards
last night (Wednesday, Nov. 11) at
tJ*.c annual Citizen of the Tear ban-
quet.
'i During her years in the class-
room, Blackard was personally in-
volved in her teaching and prepar-
ing the young people of Port Aransas
*o meet the challenges of the world,
said Jim Sherrill, who made the pre-
sentation.
• Born into a farming family in
■Nixon, Blackard graduated from
high school there in 1950, and at-
tended business college in San An-
tonio.
’* She moved to Corpus Christi in
T952 and attended University of
Corpus Christi. Three years later,
she went to work in Port Aransas
Independent School District. She
earned her master’s degree in 1961.
Blackard’s life story is a love story
• actually three love stories. One was
her husband Blackie, who died in
1989; another is her son, Stormy;
and educating people of all ages.
She’s also devoted to her God and
the First Baptist Church. (Blackie
and Marjorie were the first couple
to be married in the church.)
During her second year in Port
Aransas, she met and married
Blackard. Their son, Stormy, arrived
in 1967 during Hurricane Beulah,
thus his name.
Blackie was a race car driver that
grew up in Port Aransas and also
truck driver doing long distance
hauling. At one time he ran a shrimp
boat. For about six years, the
Blackards owned and operated the
Shifting Sands Seafood restaurant
in the building that is now Interna-
tional Bank. Marjorie would work
there evenings and weekends while
teaching school all day.
When Blackie died in 1989,
Stormy gave up racing because it
wasn’t the same without his dad.
Today, Stormy is a ferry boat cap-
tain who lives in Rockport.
When Marjorie started teaching,
she taught second through fifth
grades. The last 1 7 years of her ca
reer was teaching remedial reading
in the first five grades.
After teaching for 39 years, she
retired in 1994.
When she first Carrie'to work in
Port Aransas, the late Vera Fortson
was superintendent. Since that time
she outlasted seven more superin-
tendents.
High school principal Skipper
Lister and school bail J U usice Ben
Brundrett were former students of
Blackard.
During her teaching tenure, she
taught 1,102 students, many of them
children and grandchildren of origi-
nal students.
In 1983, a proclamation from the
school board named Marjorie the
district’s “outstanding teacher." She
was also the nominee for national
teacher of the year honors.
In honor of Marjorie’s distin-
guished service, former superinten-
dent Guy Martin started the
Blackard Family Scholarship Fund.
Of her teaching, she once said, “I
believe each child must be taught as
an individual. I do not mean that
each subject must be presented in-
dividually to each child, but as I teach
a group of students, I must be award
of the individuality of each child. I
must attempt to teach the whole
child.”
She wanted to help each pupil she
had to be a productive person and
felt that she had to “continue to learn
to teach.”
“i know of no one that has influ-
enced and impacted the lives of so
many in our community, in such a
positive way as has Marjorie
Blackard," Sherrill said.

Jo Ann Page added a new' bird to
her list Monday morning,. Nov. 9.
Munching on Chinese tallow berries
was a brown thrasher. Page looked
up the bird, hut confirmed its iden-
tity with local bird watching expert
Joan Holt. Page described the bird as
‘kind of iike a wood thrush or a
mocking bird, but was rufous.yolored
on hack. It was very pretty.” Joining
the thrasher were three catbirds.
Page said “I hate to tear myself away
from this window” overlooking her
back yard, but she had to get to
Corpus Christi. Brown thrashers are
about the size of a mtx:kingbird and
are rufous-brown above, w hite below
with dark brown streaks. Its bill is
curved and it has a long tail. It is
known to winter in the Gulf Coast
and Florida, the southernmost part
of its breeding range which extends
north to Canada and northern New
England.
