Red tide threatens
red drum hatchery
The red tide invasion which al-
ready has taken a toll of fish along
the Texas coast now has Texas
Parks and Wildlife Department of-
ficials worried about operations at
the Flour Bluff hatchery.
Gene McCarty, Manager of the
GCCA-John Wilson Saltwater Fish
Hatchery, said a patch of red tide in
the Upper Laguna Madre adjacent
to the hatchery caused stoppage of
pond-filling for three days.
“Fortunately, cooler weather and
rain apparently knocked the red
tide down a bit, and we were able to
start pumping again this week,”
McCarty said.
If the hatchery’s supply of water
is tainted by red tide organisms,
there would be no place to rear red
drum redfish fry produced in in-
door tanks at the hatchery,
McCarty explained. Six of the facili-
ty’s 10 ponds already are filled, he
said.
Crews were able to stock satellite
ponds at the Dow Chemical Co.
ponds at Freeport with about 2 mil-
lion fry. McCarty said if no further
problems result from the red tide,
the two facilities should be able to
produce some 4 million redfish fin-
gerlings to stock in Texas bays.

Halloween hijinks
Islanders of all ages donned costumes, make-up and masks
on Friday, Oct. 31, for a Halloween parade from the Island
State Bank to the H.G. Olsen Elementary School Gym, site
of the annual PTO Halloween Carnival. The parade route
was jammed with a variety of spooks as hundreds of Hallo-
ween celebrants marched toward the games, goodies and
good times at the carnival. (Staff photos by Murray Judson)
