direct the order of our environ-
ment
Think about it for a moment. How
many fish have you caught in your
lifetime? How many fish do you
suppose are caught by sportfisher-
man from your favorite port in the
course of just one season? And now,
just how many fish do you suppose
have been removed from the sea
during the past couple weeks by the
unimpassioned force of Nature?
Our efforts to supplement and
regulate the fishery populations do,
indeed, seem feeble in the face of
such natural disasters as the past
major freezes and the current ons-
laught of red tide toxins. How many
redfish did we put in the bays, ver-
sus how many were taken out in
one fell swoop? And more impor-
tantly, how many of the forage fish,
the baitfish, the other parts of the
puzzle, have been swept from the
waters with no thought of their
being replaced?
We humans are often so very
jealous of our natural resources.
The sportsfisherman regard the red-
fish and trout as their personal
belongings, legislating and regulat
ing their own personal niche in the
overall bank account of resources,
and then along comes something
like the red tide that shows no
respect, no recognition of such
claims, hut rather wipes it all away,
laws or no laws, reaffirming once
again the overall supremacy of Na-
ture itself.
F’ersonally, I’m rather surprised
that Cleveland Amory and Jane
Fonda haven’t pulled into Port
Aransas yet with a busload of col-
lege kids on a mission to “Save the
Fish.” I mean, after all, they’re the
ones that are really concerned with
the environment, right?
We’ll survive this current disas-
ter. I say “we” meaning all of us, the
people, the fish, the sea itself. Our
local economies will suffer, espe-
cially when jeapordized rather
than factual reporting. And the fish
populations will be trimmed and
cut, perhaps necessitating reduc-
tions in our own harvests.
But we’ll survive and adjust, be-
cause we are all parts of the same
intricate, delicately balanced order
of things that we call Nature. And
for those of us who might have got-
ten cocky and become convinced
that it was we humans who ran the
show, these weeks of red tide might
help bring hack the reality that
instead, we humans are mighty help
less when it comes to dictate what
happens with our environment.

Fishing report
Snapper, redfish run strong
Snapper fishermen are still reel-
ing’em in from offshore, and anglers
in the channel are catching some
nice redfish and trout, along with a
few big flounder.
Over at Fisherman’s Wharf, lots
of red snapper, are coming in, as
well as some ling up to 25 pounds
and a few kingfish and Spanish
mackerel. Other catches have in-
cluded a spotted goat fish, normally
found in the waters of Bermuda
and Brazil, as well as two blue mar-
lin and three sailfish.
Deep Sea Headquarters is re-
porting excellent catches of red
snapper, along with grouper, At-
lantic sharpnose shark and lots of
blacktip shark, up to 106 pounds.
Also some redfish, trout and big
flounder are being caught.
Anglers out of Dolphin Docks
are reporting good catches of red
snapper, as well as amberjack up to
38 pounds, some Atlantic sharp-
nose shark, a few kingfish and a
barracuda here and there.
Woody’s Sports Center is report
ing some good redfish and speckled
trout action off the north jetty on
live shrimp. Several people are lim-
iting out on reds over there, espe-
cially in th ' mornings. Fishermen at
the harbor breakwaters are reeling
in some nice croaker, whiting and
sand trout, mostly on dead shrimp.
Our roving bay angler has been
too busy to get out since t lie red t ide
dissipated, but he said he has heard
that flounder are really coming in
as of late.
No fishing report was available
from Horace Caldwell Pier this
week.
