PORT ARANSAS SOUTH JETTY
Boat lighting contest
Call out for decked bows
Halloween is history and with a
little imagination one can almost
smell the Thanksgiving t urkey roast
ing. If you can take it that far, go a
step further and sniff the aroma of
Christmas.
In Port Aransas the smell of
Christmas is laced with salt And
nowhere do salt, sea and the
Christmas season combine better
than in Port Aransas at the Boat
lighting Contest.
Christmas Island style kicks off
Saturday, Iiec. 13. with an event
that attracts more and more spec
tators and participants each year.
Sponsored by the Chamber of
Commerce, the event puts Christ
mas in high gear and brings the
community together in a demon-
stration of the true spirit of the
season.
Chamber manager Lanette Nolle
says the format of the event is the
same for 1986 as it was last year.
The Scat Cat will arrive at the
city marina from Fisherman’s
Wharf with the Community Presby-
terian Church Choir aboard .As
Santa Claus arrives via Coast
Guard cutter, the jolly gentelman
will be serranaded by the choir and
spectators who sing along That will
signal the beginning of the parade
of decorated boats past the Scat
Cat where the judges will be watch
ing. IVccratcd mat leuiain at
dock will be judged prior to the
parade.
A $100 first prize will be given for
the Best Decorated Boat and an-
other $100 will go to the Most Origi-
nally Decorated Boat. Second
places in each category w ill receive
$50.
.As the boats parade back and
forth across the marina, Santa
Claus will take his place on a spe-
cially decorated platform where,
with help from his elves (Port Aran
sas High School cheerleaders), he’ll
hear the Christmas wishes of the
island's little ones.
The festivities begin at 6:30 p.m.,
"when it's good and dark," Mrs.
Nolte said.
Last year members of the Hock-
port Sailing Club joined t he parade.
This year, a contingent from that
group mav return as will other
boats from the area. Mrs. Nolte said
she has already had inquiries about
the event.
No entry fee is recjuired. but boat
captains are asked to contact Mrs.
Nolte at 749-5919 to enter their
name and the name of their boat.
The contest, Mrs. Nolte emphas-
ized, is not just a big boat contest. In
fact, in recent years, boats as small
as row boats have been big winners.
An example of that was the Hun-
key Dory, with Capt. Hayden Abel
which took first place in 1985 for
the most originally decorated boat.
Second place in that division was
the Reverie from Rockport with
Capt. Jim Weber.
First place in best deocrated for
1985 was the Penny Mac with Capt.
Reed McFadden. The Chiriga with
Capt. John Bunton of Rockport
took second place.
Entries are being taken now.
Just rewards
Port Aransas residents were served a lasagne supper in appreciation for their support of
the fourth annual Port Aransas Garden Club's Clean Up Campaign. The campaign
spanned the month of October and last Wednesday, Oct. 29, the supper was served to the
public at the Community Center. Cooperation from the community was helped along by
City Hall. The City offered free brush pick up during the month and allowed lumber,
metal and other items to be left at the city dump at no charge. School children were also
involved in a poster contest that encouraged keeping the town clean. (Staff photo by
