Washington Dec 20 The Inter
state Commerce Commission has de
cided to make the rate of 2 per ton on
iron ore from Jefferson Tex to Birm-
ingham Ala operative on one day no-
tice instead of on thirty Mr Shep
pard who has been prosecnting this
matter before the commission thinks
this assures a permanent market for the
iron ore of Northeast Texas
Mr Sheppard says this redaction of
rate is to be credited to the favorable
report recently made by the Govern
ment engineers on the navigability oi

There is no doubt the Nashville
American is correct that the larg-

about it not only being the largest

HIGH GRADE TEXAS IRON ORE
Hardly a month passes nowadays
without there being brought to lisht
in of
some one the Southern States
some sew and distinct source of wealth
constantly tending to make this sec-
tion beyond all others inviting to the
and
to the laborer The dig
covery comes either in the shape of
different different
and general use
to which the raw material already ex
in
abundance can be put or in
accidental uncovering of vast bodies
of minerals of great commercial value
whose existence in the particular local-
ity where discovered no one had
dreamed of as at all likely
The comparative recent discovery of
what is
said to be best if not the
largest ore in the South atJefferson
which is sixty miles west of
Shreveport La is of more than pass
significance of the South Many
recent analyses of this ore show that it
carries an average of 60 per cent metal
iron about 2 per cent of silica and
Oljper cent ol phosphorus The very
high grade of this ore will warrant its
shipment to comparatively distant
markess for conversion The present
owners of the property are now making
arrangements to ship ore in large
quantities to Birmingham Ala which
certainly looks like carrying coals to
Newcastle Whilevthe ore is a limon
it is very different in its formation
and structure from the ordinary brown
s of the South It4s claimed that it
in an unbroken ledge from three to
fifty eet thick covering many thous
ands of acres thus making the cost of
mining very low With the low freight
that are usually given on raw ma >
terial there is no valid reason why this
ore cannot be brought to the furnaces
this Stale in Mi ntgomery Dickson
Hickman and Wayne counties
In fact it is understood that some of
these furnaces are already looking into
matter with a view of making trial
shipments While the distance would
great only those accustomed to us
ore in making iron realize the vast
difference in cost between using an ore
containing 60 per cent of metallic iron
and ane oi 50 per cent or less In coke
consumption and output this difference
marked If this ore is hereafter
shipped in great quantities to such dis-
tant points the moisture couldljy mod
roasters be done away with at the
mines greatly lessening the weight in
creasing the metallic iron to a still
higher point and putting the ore in
betjer condition for use with a decided
lessening of fuel required which in this
section constitutes about twothirds of
cost of making pig iron
Furnacemen are awaiting with inter
the first tras of this new ore

Animal Instinct
A friend of mine saw two cats ap-
proaching each other ou the top of
board fence There was no 100mfor
them to pass each other and he won-
dered what would happen When they
were near each other one of them
stopped turned around and retreated
till It came to another board fence that
joined at rignt angles the one they
were on The cat stepped off on this
fence and waited there till the other
went by My friend thought this act
showed an appreciation of the problem
beyond the reach of instinct No doubt
those
cats had met before and ono
was master of the other What more
natural than that the defeated cat
should retreat before the superior and
when it came to the other fence step
off upon it and let the victor pass
The action Involved no mental process
any more than when two luert bodies
in motion meet each other and one
gives way There was no other course
open to the cat If she or he had
turned back and taken to the side
fence solely to accommodate the other
cat why that were another matter
The Gordon setter that met a train
of cars upon a railroad bridge and
stepped down upon one of the timbers
of the bridge and stood there while
tlia train passed gave no proof of rea-
soning powers It was the only thing
the dog could do Nearly all animals
know enough to get out the way of
danger If they did not what would
become of the race of animals John

The old Roman laws according to

Spoiled Their Waltzing
In her memoirs Mme de Bolgne
gives some Interesting glimpses
English social life For Instance
writes
In 1810 no young English lady ven-
tured to waltz The Duke of Devon-
shire returned from a tour In Germany
and observed one evening at a large
ball that a woman was never seen
better advantage than when waltzing
I do not know whether he was anx-
ious to play a trick but he repeated
this assertion several times It nas
passed from mouth to mouth and
the next ball all the young ladies were
waltzing The duke admired them
greatly said that it was delightful
gave proper animation to a ball
then added carelessly that he at any
rate had decided never to marry
lady who waltzed It was to
Duchess of Richmond aad at Carlton
House that he saw fit to make this
revelation The poor duchess the most
clumsy of matchmaking mammas near-
ly fell off her chair with horror
repeated the statement to her neigh-
bors who passed it on and consterna-
tion spread from seat to seat The
young1 ladles continued to waltz with
clear consciences The old ladles were
furious but the unfortunate dance was
concluded Before the end of the even-
ing the good Duchess of Richmond
was able to announce that her daugh-
ters felt an objection to waltzing
which no persuasion of hers could ever
overcome Some few gills of more
dependence continued to waltz but
majority gave it up

And pa whats a honeymoon

Guess so Keep quiet Dont ask
so many fool questions Look at the
sea gulls
But aint they a good deal alike
simoons and honeymoons
Ugh huh both full of hot air Most
honeymoons become simoons in a few
years When the honeys gone the
sighs left
Pa were you ever on a honey-

Life Saving and Law
The Roumanians are as curious in
some things as the Chinese A girl
who fell Into theNrlver and was swept
down by the current finally seized
bush on the bank and drew herself
to shore The owner of the land on
which the bush grew immediately
claimed a reward of 4 shillings because
his bush was there and had saved her
Her father refused to pay and there
was a lawsuit What the law has to
decide is whether drowning people can
make use of bushes on the bank with-
out paying for the same or n nether the
assistance of the said bush Is worth
certain sum of money

The Navel Orange
For a product of nature a California
navel orange as it graces the breakfast
table or the push cart is about the
most artificial thing In the world It
Js also a very striking illustration of
the fact that while beauty may be
only skin deep it counts for a whole
lot To begin with the navel orange
of California is an exotic reaching Its
present habitat after devious wander-
ing And be it ever so sweet tasting
if Its skin has had its beauty marred it
scarcely ever gets farther than the
orchard where it grew Not 6nly that
but even the most comely ones before
they are boxed and shipped aro brush-
ed by machinery and polished and
otherwise fussed with to give them a
beauty which mere nature never would
have provided William R Stewart In

That the late occupant of the
building in which wo now enconsed
did not move all his stock in trade
when he abandoned thehouse was
practically evidenced in a real live
snake we found here No doubt
the reptile has been magnified into
a thousand snakes on occasions
when booze fighters here were go
ing into the delirium tremens state
and pliant hallucinations No
more will that snafce ever join his
sizz with the jocund sounds of
revelry and swell himself up to the
importance of main factor in pro
ducing double vision and horrible
imaginations

NEWSPAPER SUBSCRIPTION LAW
Few readers or publishers of papers
fully or clearly understand the law gov-
erning subscriptions The decisions of
the United States Court are
1 Subscribers who do not express
notice to the contrary are considered as
wishing to renew their subscriptions
2 If subscribers order the discontin-
uance of their perodical the publisher
may continue to send them until all
arreaees are paid
3 If subscribers neglect or refuse to
take their perodicals from the post office
to which they are addressed they are
responsible unt 1 they haye settled their
bills and ordered them discontinued
4 If8ul6cribers move to other places
without informing the publisher and
the paper is sent to the former address
they are held responsible
5 J he courts have decided that re
fusing to take nerodicals from the office
or removing and leaving them uncalled
for is prima facia evidence of fraud
6 If subscribers pay in advance
they are bound to give notice at the
end of the time if they do not wish to
continue taking it otherwise the pub
lisher is authorizes to send it and the
subscriber will bo responsible until ex-
press notice with payment of all ar-
rearages is sent in to the publisher
The latest postal laws are such that
newspaper publishers can arrest any
one for fraud who takes a paper and re
fuses to pay for it Under the law the
man who allows his subscription to run
along for some time unpaid and orders
it marked refused and have a post-
card sent notiijingthepublisherleaves
himself liable to arrest and fined same
as theft
