TRUCK FARMING
la this issue tbe Jimplecate is
glad to note that Walter LemmonB
living north of the city writes in-
terestingly of truck farming and
that he will confine himself to the
cultivation of sweet potatoes for
market The way to succeed is to
do well what ever your task may-
be that will carry you to prosperi-
ty and to grow potatoes successful-
ly and plenty of them would be a
paying business
The Jimplecute bad a friend in
an adjoining state to write last fall
to gettrateB on one hundred bush-
els or more of sweet potatoes such
as be knew was raised in Marion
county but he was informed the
crop was short and not sufficient
to supply the borne market
Canning sweet potatoes is also a
growing industry Let Marion
county have a cannery and put up
potatoes when the market is low
The Jimplecute is interested to
know that Mr Lemmon will strive
to grow more and better potatoes
and that he will write more about
his crop and also that others may-
be induced to follow bis lead
Marion county has proven that her
soil is adapted to Jtruck and fruit
growing and may it be of great
profit to the farming industry

seen that Hovey Smith who for-
merly lived here but is now a pros-

with an excursion of people from
his old home state The Jimple
cute feels that citizens and relatives
of these excursionists Bbould unite
in giving some out door entertain-
ment and show these South Caro-
linians some EaBt Texas proverbal
hospitality and would suggest that
L G Fruitt our popular public
weigher who is also a South Caro-

Pupils in tbe eighth ninth
tenth and eleventh grades should
be required to do a small amount
of reading outside of school This
reading could be done on Satur-

They will read somethingignorant

should see to this and not only

their work How many pupils

list could be read easily during our

neglects to have classics studied is
neglecting that for which we are
striving to educate a love for tbe

PLAY
Teach children how to play
This subject should receive tbe at
tention of the teachers Play can
be made pleasant and instructive
Any one who will notice childen
on tbe play ground will feel the
need of this study Rainy days
when children are kept in doors
require plays or games Teach-
ers can turn these to good account
render them very pleasant to the
pupils and avoid the noise and con
tuBion tnat usually result
STUDY OF THE SCIENCES IN THE
HIGH 8CHOOL
No pupil should leave tbe high
school without some knowledge of
physics botany zoology and as-
tronomy We owe it to the pu-
pils as a preparation for life to
make them realize the forces and
phenomena of nature and the laws
that govern them These subjects
need not be studied in detail but
grasped as a whole
The study should be sufficient to
make the pupil want to know more
Tbe greatest criticism on our H
S work iB this lack the lack of
enough of the sciences a sixteeu
weekscourse would prove a bless-
ing to the pupils
EDUCATION
To possess a sjood education is
not to be a good teacher The
teacher Bhould possess knowledge
the more the better for as
Goethe saye There ia nothing
more frightful than a teacher who
knows only what his scholars are
intended to know But no amount
of learning minus the science
of education can make a person a
master of the teachers profession
The knowledge tbat distinguishes
the educator from other educated
men is tbe knowledge of tbe prin
ciples of pedagogics theoretic and
implied W H Venerable
It is lamentable tbe way soma
