DOLLAR BANQUET
TO W J BRYAN
Five Hundred Tickets Have Been
Issued Bryan Will Probably
Outline His Policy
Lincoln Neb Jan lSl Five hun-
dred tickets have been issued for the
dollar dinner to be given tonight in
honor of William J Bryan and the
promoters count on the largest at-
tendance ever had for a similar func-
tion in the State The speakers com-
prise many of the leading Democrats
of Nebraska The subject of Air
Bryans address has not been an-
nounced but it is unlikely that the
prediction that ho will announce def-
initely the policy ho is to pursue in
the approaching campaign will be
realized It is more likely the speech
will be short along general lines and
largely extempore with a possible
brief review of his European trip
Mr Bryans present stay in Lincoln is
to be short Tomorrow ho leaves for
New York City where on the night of
the 21st ho is to participate in the
banquet of the Holland Society and
from there he goes to the South to
All a number of lecture engagements
He will be accompanied by Mrs
Bryan and his daughter Grace

WAR IS NOW
INEVITABLENINE
London Spectator Sees Now No
Way to Avoid It
London Jan 17 > The Spectator now
regards war as inevitable in which it
merely follows its own significant ar-
gument that a RussoJapanese war
would be to Great Britians advantage
so long as Great Britain is an onlooker
and while the straggle does not in-
volve any other power The Specta-
tor has previously pointed out in
guarded language that such a war was
likely to leave both Russia and Japan
crippled neither gaining a great ad-
vantage over the other which sug-
gests the deduction current in official
circles here that in this event Great
Britain would be in a better position to
farther her spheres of influence in the
far easl unmolested by fear of Japan
becoming a too paramount power iu
that quarter of the globe Baron Hay
ashi said humorously tonight Great
Britain and America might well raise
a subscription in our behalf for if war
results and we win they are bound to
benefit by it
Poll Tax Receipts
Up to Saturday night County Tax
Assessor McReynolds had i9sned 2414
poll tax recipts and City Collector
Davis had issued about 400
This morning the collectors offices
were doing a rushing business and
the above figures will be considerably
increased
We would suggest to those who in-
tend to pay their tax that they dont
wait until the last day as the collec-
tors will not be able to handle too big
a rush and yon may not be able to get
your recept

Belton Texas Jan 17 One of tho
biggest conflagrations in Belton for
several years occured this niorAing at
1 oclock The livery stable of Hardin
Andrews was completely destroyed by
fire and nine horses and about twenty
vehicles were burned up The fire
originated near one of the feed bins
and as the structure was frame the
flames spread rapidly The lire was
under full headway when discovered
and the structure was too near gone
when the department arrived to do
any good By hard work the row of
stores across the alley were saved
State Conventions
Austin Texas Jan 16 Chairman
James B Wells of the State Demo-
cratic Executive Committee is ex-
pected here tomorrow to confer with
prominent members of the party in
regard to calling a meeting of the
committee for the purpose of fixing
the time and places for holding the
State convention for electing delegates
to the National Democratic conven-
tion at St Louis and the convention
to nominate State officers There is a
general sentiment in favor of holding
the convention to nominate delegates
to tbe National convention early in
May The Terrell election law pro-
vides that the convention to nominate
State candidates shall be held in Octo-
ber San Antonio will probably be
selected a3 the meeting place of the
first convention and Houston for tho
second convention I
