Senator Joe Bailoj like our
own James Stephen Hoggis look-
ing for trouble from a certain
source and in his speech at
Stevensville said
I have heard however from
time to time as I have recently
traveled over the state that an-
other conflict between the people
and the railroads is impending I
do not know who are to be the
leaders on either side out I de-
sire here and now to say that if it
comes I volunteer to fight on the
peoples side as long as the con
flict lasts I helped to place our
railroad commission law and our
stock and bond law upon our
statute books and I shall resist
with my utmost strength any
effort to repeal or emasculate
them They are wise and just
and wrought untold good for the
people of this state They are an
important part of our settled pol-
icy and every thoughtful and
patriotic citizen of Texas should
defend them against the attacks
of corporate greed In time they
will be and doubtless they ought
to be amended but every amend-
ment ought to be and shall be if
I can have my way in the direc-
tion of making them stronger and
more perfect in the protection
which they afford our people

A subscriber wants to know
why since the electric light plant
put in the meter system they
jerk the lights away from their
customers before they get on their

doing too much business
The Victoria Advocate alludes
to the fact that newspaper men
are often accused of malice and
sensationalism but there is no
class of men whoexercise greater
forbearance or who make it a rule
to practice the maxim of return-
ing good for evil so much as the
average newspaper man They
often suppress news that ought to
be made public out of regard
for the feeling of those who would
be affected thereby
The big Pullman car works at
Pullman have shut down and
seven thousand workmen are idle
The company claims it cannot
pay the high wages demanded
The public has long been kicking
against the high rates charged by
the Pullman company but has
not adopted the extreme measures
the Pullmans have to correct the
evil Perhaps after all the con-
ductors and porters are getting
the lions share

PALESTINE TEXAS SEPTEMBER 16 1904
LOOKINQ FOR TROUBLE
Theres a patriot a democrat and
a gentleman for you And yet
there were people in Texas a few
weeks ago who presumed to ques
tion the zeal and orthodoxy of this
great Texas democrat in the pres-
ent campaign Nacodoches Sen-
tinel
J W Ozijiknt favors the trade
day idea and thinks that with a
little effort the expenditure of a
few dollars the giving of a few
prizes and our stores offering bar-
gains thousands of people can be
brought to Palestine at least one
day in each month and thousands
of dollars will be spent with Pal-
estine merchants that they would
not get otherwise Why not have
a monthly trade day
The Beaumont Journal says
Governor Hogg does not appear
to have suffered from the criticism
flung upon him because of his
convention speech Governor
Hogg is democracys sentinel who
guards the outposts while the
rank and file of the army is asleep
lie has sounded the alarm signal
that the enemy is near and
though the leaders feign deafness
the rank and file will respond to
the signal when the fight grows
hot

TEXAS AT THE WORLDS FAIR
From The American Farmer
Near the south entrance of the build-
ing the Texas booth is much in evi-
dence not so mncb perhaps from the
fruit in sight as from the amount of
lumber shown in its construction The
Texas fruit is most interesting from
the fact that the great size and various
climates of the big state made it possl
bio to show side by side the earliest
and tho latest fruits of the season For
example in poaches Alexanders from
tho Panhandle Elbertas from north-
east Texas and Lemon or Orange
clings from tho central part of tho
state appeared at the samo time in
pears Early Harvest and Lo Com to
were on hand together and in this
seasons apples fairly well colored
wintor varioties occupied plates ad
joining early summer kinds The sea
son for the Elborta peach extended
from tho middle of June to the latter
part of August The earliest ones
coming from tho southern part of east
Texas and tho last from tho neighbor-
hood of Eastland county
Tho exhibit has been remarkable
throughout from the number of intro-
ductions of now and valuable varieties
of peaches poas and grapes Perhaps
the most valuable new peach is the
large yellow Guinn which comes in
with the earliest kinds and almost
equals the Elborta from a market
standpoint Tho Aransas Beanty also
has attracted much favorable atten
tion The Bruce pear is considered a
remarkable production owing to its
largesize good market qualities and
excellent texture and ilavor It is
claimed for it that even whon picked
very green it will soften and color In
storage and produce an edible fruit
In grapes tho Texas display appears
to excel in point of quality and varie-
ty Most of tho thirtysix varieties
entered are from the home vineyard
of Prof T V Munson the famous
vino breeder and propagator and
many are of his most recont creations
shown here for the first time
Several fine specimens of grapps
from tli3 East Texas Experimental
Station at Troupe go to demonstrate
that the greatest peach region of the
state Is equally qualified for the sup
cessful growth of the vine
Tho color and quality or the ap plea
from tho Red River country has sur
prised tho growers from tho oldervap
fence of red oak rails It is rrea
sonabhy believed that sufJ n
structure Btaiiillii dii i Jp < Bfr

purpose of its standing in such a
spot and this is precisely the de
sign of the owner In this cabin

prove the right of every human
being to the use of the earth as
well as of the air and light
On last Friday night J G H
Buck delivered a lecture in the
public school building in Elkhart
explaining the doctrine and ask
ing all to propound such questions
as any auditor wished to have an
swered on the subject His hear
ers were dcephy interested and
some of them asked some ques-
tions and afterward requested him
to talk again at some other time

plo states Bon Davis and Arkansas
Black have been exhibited which
show fully as much perfection in col-
oring as any fruit from the hills of
Arkansas or Missouri From this one
is led to surmise that certain large
sections of Texas are as well adapted
to apple orcharding as are some which
aro older and better advortised
was learned that parties in tho north-
ern part of Texas are making as large
plantings of apples as aro others in
sotting peaches iu East Texas
A prominont feature of tho oxhibit
from tho big state is the remarkable
collection of pecans and hickory nuts
It seems that in a natural state these
nut trees became crossbred and the
results of such crossing aro shown in
the nuts displayed There is overy
graduation from the smooth thin
shelled pecan to tho rough heavy
hickory nut Pecans aro shown from
tho sizo of a peanut to dimensions
larger than the best butternuts Spec-
imens of all cultivated varieties aro
shown besides many valuable seed
lings not yet introduced Without
doubt Texas has tho largest most
varied and complete pecan exhibit in
the building
Up to tho present timo this state has
led in tho display of a variety of large
rich watermelons Tho Hempstead
region produces tho finest specimens
though excellent melons have come in
from many parts of the state The
cantaloupes wore of very high quality
early in the season but owing to un-
timely rains in July the bulk of the
crop was injured by lack of quality
Tho exhibit of preserved figs at-
tracts much attention owing to the fine
appearanco of the jars By some un
known method tho outer rough skin
of tho fig is removed in the process of
preparation for canning and this
leaves the Kg in a most tempting con-
dition for those who have experienced
tho delgbt3 of eating porserved Texas
figs Since tho method of canning
skinless figs has been discovered
largo plants have been erected for
preserving this fruit and in tho coast
country oxtensive orchards aro being
planted to supply the canneries In
this way a now industry has been
started tho magnitude of whith in a
few years it would be hard to estimate
