Was Ecorted From Houston Baseball
Field By an Officer
The Houston Chronicle of this morn-
ing has the following to say of Bill
Lucky Wright formerly of this city
but now an umpire In the SouthTex
as League
Lucky Wright was escortedfrom
the basebHll field Wednesday by an of
fleer For the first time In many years
such an event has marked a baseball
game in Houston When as a matter
or fact the blame for the loss ofyes
terdays game and poor showing of
weeks past rests upon the players the
wrath of the spectators fell upon the
lone man who stood defenseless in the
middle of the diamond
Wright has made a few mistakes
during his stay in Houston but alto
gether his work has been of an order
calculated to do him credit Those
very decisions of the day of thtj dem-
onstration against him were as ac-
curate as might have been offered

HE LAUGHED ONCE TOO OFTEN
Stcry of How a Farmer Invested His
Twenty Thousand Dollars
There was a prosperous Iowa farm-
er who by hard work and saving
managed to accumulate 20000 It is
no Joke to accumulate 20000 on a
farm Many a tim that farmer
pitched hay until after the stars were
shining and many a time he had
stirred up the family of a humble but
hightempered bee and many a time
the brindle cow had wrapped her un

laundered tale about his face in the
good old summer time Many a time
he had gone to town and cut out the
dinner or possibly had sutislled his
hunger with a cents worth of bologna
and 2 cents worth of cheese which
rose up in Its might to meet him
COOKING IS FUN
IF YOU HAVE A GAS STOVE
r
But he had accumulated 20000 and
sold his farm He went to the clt > of
Wichita to invest it and was surprised
at the number of good things that
seemed to be waiting for him There
were chances all around to Invest Chat
money and double It In a few months
or years at the outside He took one
of the good things He invested his
20000 In a business which he didnt
know a thing in the world about but
which the man who sold it to him as
sured him was the softest snap that
ever fell to the lot of a man who had >
20000 to invest
It was a soft snap for the man who
sold the business The man who paid
the 20000 found that he had invested
In a choice lot of debts which his 20
000 went to pay The creditors of the
late owner of the business were glad
because they really never hoped to get
10 cents on the dollar and the 20
000 paid by the Iowa farmer enabled
them to collect 75 or SO cents on the
dollar
When the farmer realized
had been buncoed he hunted up th
man who inveigled him into the tv
and wiihJearsin his eyes begged
000 to keep him and his ftmily fromj
immediate want The wan who had
sold him an interest in the business
laughed It was the wrong time for
mirth
Solomon said there isa time to
laugh and a time to moucn Sol was
onto the fact that there are times
when laughing is out of place If Sol
had been alive and present when the
man who had roped In the farmer
laughed he would have waVned him
that it was an inauspicious time
The farmer had no money but he
had a revolver in his rear pantaloons
pocket which he had saved from the
wreck
Several neighbbrs and relatives
gathered at the funeral of the man
who laughed They said as they
passed the coffin that the corpse
looked quite natural
The jury who heard the evidence
against the Iowa farmer brought in a
verdict of not guilty They said that
he was suffering from temporary In-
sanity when he perforated the person
of the man who laughed When a
jury wants to acquit a man they can
generally find a way to do it
In that case the verdict or the jury
was generally satisfactory The peo-
ple said that the man who would
laugh at a man he had robbed of 20
000 deserved to die on general prin
ciples and temporary insanity was as
good an excuse for the farmer who
did the business as anything else
