A FULL VOTE NECESSARY
Inasmuch as a great principle is In-
volved In the coming election on
May 2nd it is essential that a full
democratic vote of the state be cast
that the decision may be one of the
party of the state In this connection
the Herald feels inclined to make a
special appeal to the antiBailey men
to go to the polls and vote You may-
be sure that most of the Bailey vote
will be polled and every antiBailey
man who stays away from the polls
will contribute to that extent in en-
dorsing Baileylsm and voting it on the
people of the state Another thing
that is worth special emphasis is the
fact that the greatest opposition to
Baileylsm is among the farmers of the
state and It will be by their vote that
jBaae fefli ish7 beicf n iijii TnV mk
in this county for example while the
town of Palestine Is largely divided
with possibly a majority against Bai-
ley our best information is that the
county is almost solid against Bailey
and the same reports come from most
counties So you will see the burden
of the decision rests on the people in
the country And this being so it Is a
responsibility that the country people
should meet squarely The Herald
appreciates that It is a busy time with
farmers and commends them for stay-
ing by their crops but It will not take
long to go to the polls and cast a vote
on this question and It Is a duty every-
man owes to his state and to the
democrats of the nation Let us set-
tle this Issue fully and say once for
all whether our public servants shall
serve two masters or the people only
If you are opposed to Baileylsm it Is a
duty you owe your state and yourself
to go td the polls and vote The issue
depends on the individual vote for set
tlemenL Will you help settle It

BAILEY IS COMING
The Herald gives considerable
space today to the announcement of
arrangements for the coming of Sen-
ator Bailey on Friday and in addition
to the announcement publishes what
is designated as the reception commit-
tee of the Bailey club The Herald is
always ready to do the square thing
by both sides of a public issue and
while opposed to Bailey and all that
he stands for in the present contro-
versy in this state still as a news-
paper It gladly prints the announce-
ment of the opposition and hopes the
senator will be received as becomes a
guest within our gates
AN EXAMPLE
Recently at a meeting that ivas go-
ing on not a great ways from Denton
the good brother who was filling the
pulpit said among other things that
You cannot serve God and mammon
at thesame time A member of the
congregation who had been listening
attentively grabbed his hat and hur-
ried out Those on the outside noticed
that he was somewhat excited and
asked what the matter was He re-
plied That old simlin headed galoot
inthere Is abusing Joe Bailey Den-
ton Record and Chronicle
The San Antonio Express is discuss-
ing a new way to reach the North
pole We are not interested It is the
gulf or Pikes Peak for us
The potato crop is most flattering
and Is going to be some earlier this
year than usual Anderson count is
coming to the front as the home of
truck And tobacco
JTbereiSonlyone question to be
settled Can a public official draw
money from both sides of the case at
the Bame time The day to settle it
Is May 2 Are you ready for the
question
The tomato report from Mr Munro
published In these columns yesterday
has caused much comment and people
are discussing his method of getting
there He will likely have many ques
tions to answer from Interested
ties
A pure cream of tartar powder
Its fame is world wide
No alum no phosphate of lime
The poisonous nature of alum is
so well known that the sale of
condiments and whiskey con-
taining it is prohibited by law
In buying baking powder examine the

The Herald can say with good grace
that It hopes that Senator Bailey will
have a big audience to hear his speech
in this city Friday for it Is our judg-
ment that the more people who hear
him the more there will he who vote
against him That is our faith in An-
derson county men
The Herald would not expect Sen-
ator Bailey to be in a good humor
over the situation that confronts him

in this state It would be absurd to
expect him to love his enemies know-
ing his temper ButIt is not unreas-
onable to expect him to discuss the
issue and to tell the people how and
by what means he has amassed his
fortune while serving his people in
the United States senate
Davidson is a true officer and pub-
lic servant Notwithstanding the out-
rageous attacks being made on his
piivate character he is staying at his
post of duty before the United States
supreme court at Washington trying
to secure justice for the state against
its enemies and refuses to be driven
away by even these personal attacks
No greater test has been put upon the
attorney general than that he stays
by his guns for the people while his
enemies are dragging his name In the
mire It takes a sure enough man of
character to stand to his duty under
such conditions Even the great Bai-
ley who by his own testimony is the
greatest democrat In the nation now
and forever could not show such
grace but came home on the first
train Davidson is clean grit
GOOD ROADS
A good road connecting Beaumont
with the new1 agricultural section that
is being developed in the western part
of the county is a proposition that
should receive attention Beaumont
Enterprise
There is more Interest In better
roads in this county at this time than
the editor of the Chronicle has ever
seen before This interest Is not con-
fined to any one or two localities in
the county but reports from all sec-
tions are to the same effect Road
overseers are taking an Interest In the
work and much of the work being
done Is of such a permanent nature
that it will make future work on those
places comparatively light What we
need in the county Is action just such
action as has marked the work In
many sections within the past few
weeks We can never have the roads
we would like to have until they are
worked by taxation and systematical-
ly supen ised by a competent road en-
gineer but If our present laws are en-
forced we will have roads that svillybe
passable To encourage the road In-
terest which just now seems awaken-
ing the Chornicle is offering a pre-
mium to the road overseer who writes
the best letter concerning the improve-
ment of the roads Wills Point
