IT IS WELL
The mass meeting of citizens held
at the city hall yesterday did the
proper thing in placing the town In a
receptive attitude relative to the
Union Central railroad proposition
while at the same time requiring rep
resentatives of that proposed road i6
come across with a contract signed
jointly by a committee of Palestine
citizens and reprpsentatives of the
road that will be binding on both
sides and that will require the pro-
moters to come across with any
agreement that is entered into It
was resolved to make that contract as
simple and as binding as possible
pruned of all strings and with all the
loopholes culled out It was the
sense of the meeting that Palestine
citizens want such a road and want it
hadly but that the citizens do not
elves in the iix thnr hnvn
in btjloie tilth oh empty
bag to hold after getting out and
sweating over the propostion of rais-
ing a bonus
The Herald knows the temper of
Palestine people regarding this prop-
osition and it knows that the ridicu-
lous stories being told that the citi-
zens do not want the road and that
they are throwing cold water on it
are utterly untrue There is not an
enterprising citizen of the town but
who wants to see this road built to
the extent of digging up for it But
they Insist on being shown and in
that they are right There has been
so much complaint and so many re-
ports made over the operations of
the Union Central Construction com-
pany and its agents that the people
have been in doubt They distrust
what is told them Many people think
it is a big bluff played to the limit
And the Union Central people are
responsible and they alone for this
state of affairs The knocks they
have received have come from them-
selves from their own methods of
handling the land scheme they are
promoting Some of these reported
transactions appear so doubtful that
many of the business men of the
town have turned from the proposi-
tion in disgust
This is the plain truth and nothing
but the truth and these promoters
themselves are bound to admit it if
they will but admit the truth
But aside from all this if they are
in a position to build a railroad they
can convince this people of the fact
In about three minutes after they get
their heads together and once con
