THE COTTON FIELD
O v
Boll Weevil Experience
As it will soon be time to plant
another cotton crop and as the boll
weevil is our common enemy I de-
sire to give to the farmers of the
state some of my expeilence with boll
weevil For three years acting under
the Instructions of the government
people I planted cotton as early as
possible In 1907 I planted on March
10th in 1906 J planted in March I
fertilized my land and tried in every
way to rush the crop to maturity but
on account of cold and wet weather I
frequently had to replant The cot-
ton would not grow and remained
stunted The weevil would get the
best part of the crop in spite of my
efforts After I einff terribly discour-
aged I got to thinking and arrived at
this conclusion
First there a e only a few weevils
left over from the winter and as is
the case withnll insects life with
these is compel atively short and If
we can postpone planting for a couple
of months neejssarfly many of the
old weevils woi Id die and as there is
nothing during the months of March
and April on which they can deposit
their eggs then we will not only have
less of the old weevils but will have
no joung ones o contend with Sec-
ond by plantii cotton not earlier
than May 10th we can rush it to ma-
turity and as c itton is a hot weather
plant it growel faster and develops
quicker when lot planted until hot
weather and
the weather g
the boll weevil
its hot cannot
after
repro
duce as he cai while the weather is
cool and damp Cotton can mature in
100 days wheJsplanted In May but If
planted early Jtthe weather favorable
to the reproduction of the weevil and
by the time iat hot weather comes
we have aire Ij hatched enough wee
vil to destroy 3 the crop and too the
cotton has bj this time attained size
enough to shi le the ground which all
know favors she weevil
In 190S my wo little boys planted 5
acres In cotlun and gathered four
bales averaging over 500 pounds to
the bale Tills cotton was planted on
the 10th ot tfay and was opened
enough for nicking by the latter part
of August pr as soon as cotton that
was planted in March or April On
my farm I rifide 25 bales of cotton on
35 acres of iind on which I had made
a potato crpip The cotton was plant
ed abbut hfj r 20th Late in the sura
numbS
and the I
to do an
Now r
cotton was made
eevil could not reproduce
good until cool weather
is clearly demonstrated to
my mind that if the farmers would
study thli plan and let them all have
a given ime to plant say from May
10th to iOth for this section they
would fin that they have their corn
crop practically off their hands be-
fore the citton comes on and they can
give their cotton a more thorough cul-
tivation Tjhich Is essential besides
it would lot do any good for Mr A
to plant lis cotton say the 10th ot
May whlfi Mr B just across the
road planfed his in March for Mr B
will raise bnough weevils to eat up
Mr A s cotton Let each community
plant togeher and not plant until hot
weather n poor land use commer
cial fertili2r and we have Mr Weevil
beat to a ertainty
