because hisr party has no power to
overthrow the system of protection
he believes the democrats should not
wait for a final correction but while
workirigr to this end should enjoy
some oftheprofits of protection Mr
Baifey says if the republican manu
facturer is to get a tax of protection
on his products he proposes to see to
it that the democratic Taw material
man gets a tax of protection on his
product That looks like good busi-
ness on its face and it would be if
the producer was greater than the
consumer and if the present was the
only time to be reckoned with But
the very reverse is true The con-
sumer Is in the hig majority and Mr
Baileys policy taxes the multitude to
benefit the few Mr Bailey answers
this charge by saying he is not re-
sponsible for the protective system

SIMPLY A DIFFERENT VIEWPOINT
A great many people seem to get
confusea about the tariff policies of
Bryan and Baileyand conclude that
one ortbe other contention is wrong
From their own viewpoint both men
are right i Bryan accepts the tariff
qtiestfcsasaquestieaoHwHqy ant
principle the distinguishing motive
orlinebetween the two great parties
one the republican standing for pro-
tection the other the democratic
x standing opposed to a protective tar-
iff Bryan believes the only way for
the democratic party to fight thepol
icy of protection is to fight the prin-
ciple as a whole and make no com-
promise s On the other hand Bailey
looka at the tariff proposition as a
grab game professing to beopposed
to protection as much as Bryan but
icy and he Is responsible for protec-
tion to the extent that he encourages
and votes for it though it may be
under protest Mr Bailey cannot go
Into republican territory and defend
the democratic policy because he has
a record in congress of having voted
the other way And that is where he
has done the most serious damage
his kindof democrats have disarmed
the party in its contention against
the protective tariff Their vote Is of
record Mr Bryan can meet the en-
emy and challenge its position be-
cause he has opposed the whole sys-
tem of protection Mr Bailey cannot
because he has first to explain why
he voted for protection and that dis
arms him and makes his argument
againsta high tariff a jokeT With
Bailey the tariff is a grab bag With
Bryan it is a policy of government
WHAT WE CAN DO
It is a matter of fact and statistics
that the soil of Anderson County will
produce abundantly and in great va-
riety It has been demonstrated by
actually doing it that the finest cigar
wrapper tobacco can be grown here
that is produced in the United States
andthe gGvernment survey gives this
county more Orangeburg soil the fa-
mous tobacfco land than any county
In the country And It has been
shownthatwe cangrow from nine to
twelve hundred pounds of the tobac-
co td theacre andiiU brings from
fifty cents to one dollar per pound
It has been shown that by proper cul-
tivation undertavorable seasons we
can grow on our lands an average of
one bale of cotton to the acre and
other staple crops in proportion This
year with an almost unprecedented
drouth a citizen within the corporate
llmitsof the city on pneuof the higji
est fiflls In tnestown amiori soil kti
least eighty per cent sand raised
eighty bushels of fine peanuts to the
acre and is finding a ready markPt
for them at from 150 to 200 per
bushel And such testimony could be
continued indefinitely And yet with
all of these things true our county is
not filling with good people as lt
should There must bo a reason And
it is up to the Board of Trade and
people of the county generally to find
out what this reason is and remedy it
The Herald is inclined to the opinion
that appearances and roads are at the
bottom of the trouble People who
are able to buy good farms are large-
ly Influenced by appearances and by
local conditions and such people are
not going to buy in a country where
the roads are the worst things in
that country To geta desirable peo-
ple we must have good roads good
schools and good farms Before we
makemuch further effort to attract
new people we should devote our-
selves to this task of improving our
local conditions and then we can talk
business to new people
Stove < pollsh and moth balls are the
leading fragrances at present
Lets fight it out under the motto
that the scrub must go and lets in
clude the scrub politician with the
other kinds of scrubs
Palestine should take care of a city
park proposition By and by it will
pe much harder to get a park site
Every uptodate city needs and should
have a city park
Only a few short weeks until
Christmas when the pocketbook will
get another rip up the back And we
do not know what the new tariff has
done to the situation
Admitting in Milwaukee that he
could not milk a cow wonder what
President Taft drank to remove the
dryness Only one thing ever made
that city famous you know
It is distressing that the big demo
cratic paper of South Texas one who
has challenged the people of the state
to follow Its lead has flopped and is
now standing for a protective tariff
policy We weep
Mr Bryan hands the newspapers
who are landing on him a hard jolt
Bryan among other things lias a keen
sense of humor He merely smiles at
the fellows who were swinging to his
coattall until he opposed some of
their pet special interest friends
There are certain Dallas literary
clubs that are in a peck of trouble
The attorney general of the state has
brought suit against them fpr viplat
ing the Texas liquor laws It seems
the members of these societies have
other tastes than literary and are
evading the law to satisfy their taste
