THAT OTHER FRUIT PALACE
The Herald men know quite a bit
about that other fruit palace that
made a failure and knowing the in
Uliie history oi that uutleiuikmg die
prepared to say that such a show can
be made a success and made to pay
a dlvidemd under proper management
and with the proper effort It is the
height of folly to hold up the failure
of some one or the misfortune of one
effort to discourage another of simi-
lar character It Is necessary to know
something of circumstances before
the correct conclusion is reached The
writer had the honor to be the author
of the fruit palace idea In Tyler some
sixteen or eighteen years ago and saw
a magnificent palace materialize as
tfie result of the idea and it was a
splendid show for two or three years
Afterward it was decided that it did
not pay and the plan was abandoned
But It was a shortsighted conclu-
sion for it did pay and it paid big
and it is still paying The result of
the fruit palace was the beginning of
the development of the fruit and
truck Industry in Smith county and is
in a large measure responsible today
for the splendid advancement made
by that county in this work Every
year that county ships hundreds of
car loads of fruits and truck to other
markets and the people make money
Smith county is largely occupied by
a progressive people many of them
brought there as a direct result of the
advertising given the county by the

big fruit show We have always con
tended that the fruit palace was a pay
ing proposition and as years go by we
have never had cause to change our
mind And it will pay here Such a
show will put this county before the
people of the country as a fruit and
truck center If we are wise in oar
day we will push the idea of a big
fruit show and invite the world to
come and see
Cook is still a liar according to the
Feary advocates But the doc still
gets the money for his north pole
story
The Tyler CourierTimes of yester-
day urges the people of that city to
rebuild the fruit palace for next sum-
mer Too late boys Palestine saw
it first and is going to pull off that
stunt for this section
Waco made a failure of her cotton
palace some years ago but the pres-
ent day business men of that splendid
city have decided the idea is worth-
while and it is proposed to build a-
new cotton palace next year and
make the show bigger and better
than ever That is the right kind of
pluck
Hon Cone Johnson in his Terre l
speech Saturday laid down some proti
ositions that will be very hard for hU
opponents and critics to answer Mr
Johnson believes in platform obliga-
tions and believes that law is made
for the whole people and not for any
tarticular section His views are so
clearcut that every man who believe
In law and good government must ac-
cept them
The business men members of the
Retail Merchants Association an-
nounce that their places of business
wilLbe closed all day Thanksgiving to
give the proprietors and clerks a day
for feasting and thanksgiving This
section has something to be thankful
for this year And it also has some
thing to be thankful on Turkeys
ducks and possums are plentiful
with abundant trimmings
Cone Johnson is upbraided by the
Houston Post and the Fort Worth
Record and a few other consistent
democrats for changing his opinion
about public matters The criticism
is just for no intelligent man should
ever change his views on public meas-
ures or men And that the above-
mentioned papers have undergone a
complete reversion of opinion regard-
ing the genuineness of William J
Bryans democracy is of no moment
The Herald sees no necessity of a
special legislative session at this time
to act on the prison situation As we
understand the situation the governor
has the power to correct any very
serious trouble by removal of offend-
ing officials And the Herald has no
doubt the governor will do what is
right and proper as soon as the com-
mittee puts before him the informa-
tion necessary It is up to the com-
mittee to report and recommend and
when they do the governor will be
prompt to apply the remedy as far
as he has the power And you may
depend upon this
A writer in one of the current mag-
azines has figured it out and submits
his proofs that the tax against every
man is at the average of twentythree
per cent of his income That sounds
frightful but it is not far wrong when
we consider the price demanded by
the tariff protected goods and that is
a tax The writer surmises that when
the great mass of the American peo-
ple fully realize what a tax is being
exacted from them there will be a
jarring loose from conditions that will
retire several noted statesmen who
believe their people should have some
of the protection being given out For
every dollar of protection given the
south we are taxed five and mind you
everybody contributes to the outgoing
tax while a limited few reap the ben-
efit from the Incoming protection dol-
lar It is < the greatest farce evei
preached to the south And some of
our representatives in the national
congress have swallowed the bait
hook line sinker and all We have
a sympathy for the man who has been
deceived by this rot and a contempt
for the man who knows better and
tries to deceive others
