Helle Boyd, the famous woman
spy of the Confederacy, once lived
in Texas. About 1870, she and
her husband moved to Dallas and
lived there a number of years.
She was living in Martinsburg,
Va , at the outbreak of the Civil
War and even after the Confed-
erates had left and the Union
forces had occupied the town, the
Stars and Bars continued to flut-
ter from the attic window of the
IJoyd home. A squad with a corp-
oral at the head entered the house,
brushing Belle aside and made
their way upstairs. The young
woman followed, just in time to
her mother staggering from a blow
as the corporal thrust her aside.
Belle had a pistol in her nana.
She raised the weapon and fired,
killing the corporal.
She was tried by the military
authorities but her words, “He
laid rough hands on my mother,”

won her freedom.
The Boyd home was filled with
I Union soldiers with whom Belle
flirted and from whom she ob-
tained military information which
she wrote on thin paper and then
either carried the message to the
Southern camp herself or sent it i
by a slave in a big silver watch,
from which the works had been
removed.
When the home was command-;
| eered as headquarters for Gen.'
Shields, she and her mother were
moved to a smaller cottage on the]
] grounds, Sh« observed. one day i
a great stir around the house and
sensed that something important
was in the air. She slipped un-
seen into the mansion and hid her-
self in an upstairs bedroom, in a
closet, over the living room and
spent hours there. Sure enough,
that night a conference was held
and the words of Gen. Shields
came up to her clearly. She made
notes in the darkness and had
Shields’ complete plan for cap-
turing Stonewall Jackson and his
i men.
i “My brother is dying and Gen.
Shields has given me a pass to go
to see him,” she said—and pro-
duced a pass, which actually was
genuine, though of course, the gen-
eral had not known that it would
be put to this use.
Two more times she was stopped
by sentries but each time was per-
mitted to go on and at last from
the dark came the words, “Who
goes there?” It was a Confederate
sentry.
But even though she had de-
livered the information, she must
get buck home undiscovered and
near the end of the journey,
through weariness and nerve
strain, she ignored a sentry’s chal-
lenge, lay low on the neck of her
horse, spurred the animal and
heard the bullets whiz harmlessly
pact. Next nnnrnine. when callers
came, there was Belle Boyd in the
cottage door, smiling graciously.
Later, she received a message:
“Miss Belle Boyd, I thank you for
myself and for the army for the
immense service you have rend-
ered your country today. Hastily,
I am your friend”—and it was
signed by “Stonewall” Jackson.

EDITOR PONDERS OVER
THE GOOD OLD DAYS
Seguin.—"Coffee 29 cents a lb.,
cured ham 27 cents a lb., hamburg-
er 2 lbs. for a quarter—such bar-
gains!” That’s what the editor
thought when he glanced over an
old issue of his paper that he found
stuffed in his desk drawer last
week. Then he noticed the date
was in 1931. “Maybe those were
the good old days,” he mused. But
then he remembered that lots of
people didn’t have the 29 cents
I to buy coffee in those days.

came an appliance dealer and sold
his first radio to Mr. Bruce, which
was followed by the sale of his
first refrigerator and his first deep
freezer to the same customer. Last
I week he broke the ice in the field
jof television. You guesseh it—his
! first sale was to his old customer,
Mr. Bruce.

Rockdale. Texas
Austin, Nov. 23.—More money is
now available for building hospi-
tals and health centers in Texas,
State Health Officer Geo. W. Cox
has announced.
Federal money channeled to the
states for hospital construction has
been increased from $75 million to
$150 million, and the program of
federal assistance to hospital con-
struction has been extended!
; through the fiscal year ending June j
j 30, 1955. The increase in time j
| and money is contained in an
! amendment to the Hospital Survey
! and Construction Act.
1 Under provisions of the Act, the
various states, to which the federal
] money is appropiated, makes the j
money available to local areas for
hospital or public health center
construction, if a survey shows the
area is in need of such facilities.
As of October, when the Amend-
ment became effective, the states
will put up half the money for
i new construction, and the local
] area, in which the hospital or pub-
lic health center is to be built,
must provide the other half of
the total construction costs.
Prior to October, the states put
j up only one-third, and the local
area was held responsible for rais-
j ing two-thirds of the total con-!
struction costs. On new projects
[ which had been approved prior to
October, the local area must still
l put up two-thirds of the entire
cost.
Several hospitals have been com- j
! pleted in Texas under the program.
Other projects are currently un-
der construction throughout tHe
State.
