" HT NOT have a bird sanc-
tuary in your garden. The pro-
tection of birds can become an
interesting hobby. Birds ARE
useful as well as decorative tn
our gardens, for they help to
keep down Insect enemies of
plants and flowers.
When we place feeding sta-
tions and bird-houses In trees
about the home grounds or gar-
den we should take steps to
protect the birds we are trying
to attract. This can t; done
by olacing guards on trees on
wn.cn are nesting or feeding
pla es for birds.
The accompanying fiarden-
Grapn shows three types of trre
guards which are effective for
birr) protection against cats and
squirrels. One Is made of pro-
jecting wires, while the other
two are sheet metal guards.
Any type of sheet metal
guard should ba placed high
enough on a tree to prevent
animal enemies of the birds
from Jumping above it from
Lbs ground.
In feeding on Insect peats not
only do birds taka • great
variety but they frequently de-
stroy very large numbers. Often
more than a hundred Insects
are devoured at a meal, and
in the case of small insects
sometimes several thousand. A
number of cases are known in
which trees and garden crops
have been entirely freed of in-
sect pests by birds.
For economic as well as
esthetic reasons, therefore, an
effort should he made hy all
gardeners to attract and pro-
tect birds and to increase their
number.
