IBJ Appeals Jo Labor
The Pre-'lcler.t recently appe.U»d to orjjnt.tzMJ labor
tb help him, and the nation, avoid Inflation. He told
assembled labor leaders In the AfI.-0lO he thought they
should do their part In helping 'lie nation achieve thi
goal
The President h.o ai>v spoken out. atid acted, to
prevent business from bringing about a new round of
inflation and has been criticised for Its quirk action
m releasing metal stocks to hold the price line and
bring aboil’ cancellation' of price'rise
Thus the President is appealing to both -idea in ''the
production7 Held'. and, a- he pointed oil? to the labor
lender.- at San Francisco, no one has a higher stake In
’he effort to prevent inflation than the working man.
’he consumer, who will be hard hit bv .Line price,-.
The guideline for organized labor must be to seek
wage increases in Hue with increased productivity. Labor
can, of course, do much to help management achieve
rhis increased productivity. If this process is followed,
American products will gain a greater share of the world
market, the dollar will be strengthened, and the deficit
in the international balance of payments more panly
erased.
If it is not followed. the revel e will be true and
the free enterprise s\stem, which we praise -a lavishly,
will have failed
President Johnson has been th** friend of labor since
becoming President, but he did no’ always have the en-
dorsement of labor leaders. In I act. in 1900 this was one
of the greatest weaknesses of hi- bid for the party’s top
nomination-labor refused to endorse him Thus he has
not been a traditional captive or a robot to organized
labor, and 1? is good that he put.s the facts to labor lead-
ers squarely today, and that the political situation en-
ables him to do so

The Rendezvous
The recer.t success!ul rendezvous of four American
astronauts in two spaceships, after so many disappoint-
ments and postponements, brought the U .8 space pro-
gram closer to Its original progress schedule.
It constituted another in a series of achievements
accomplished without loss of life. Thus far. the Ameri-
can space program ha-- certainly proved safe for parti-
cipants Eventually, of cour-e, there will be, and must
be, an accident. One hopes It Is far Into the future
As the various goals are achieved In the space ex-
ploration program It becomes clear..most of the tasks
are not as difficult, or dangerous, as many had feared.
That is not to detract from the performances of any
who have participated In the program, for they under-
took ’heir Jobs when it was not known how good the
program's safety measures would turn out to be
Yet It is an undeniable fact that outer space travel
Is turning out to be remarkably simple, once one .cache.-
outer space, properly protected ar.d equipped And It
seems certain the rime will soon come when scientists
make these tasks far simpler and easier, for large num-
bers of space traveler,-
A gratifying point In the u S space program Is
that we seem to have gained in the last year or two eon-
