THE BARREN LIFE
In the parable of the barren fig tree (Luke 13:6-6) Jesus shows (hat a fruit
tree haa hut one main reason for existing: to bear fralL
When a fruit tree occupies apace on the earth, receives nutriment from sun
and rain and soil, to tended carefully,, and Uten yield* no fruit, It ha* no claim to
life. "Cut If down," he aaid, "why should It use up the good ground?’*
Jesus was no hortlenlturallst—he wasn’t concerned with figs—he was encourag-
ing his children to love and good works. Our primary claim on life reals on the
assumption that we are to bear fruit—trait for the kingdom of God—that we are
to develop within ourselves ench moral aad spiritual force aa will transform the
character of our own local community and the larger community of the world.
The development of these moral and spiritual forces within involve a man’s
money. For bis moral compulsion*, his Inner attitudes, his spiritual outlook are re-
vealed most startlingly In the way he uses his money—or does not use It. As the
Lord asked us whether our money Is producing fruit for the Kingdom of God.
