WANTED-
Dr. Kerthner
influence us to
rpHE Communists have boasted
A that they would induce the
United States to spend itself into
destruction. So
there are wars, [
rumors of wars.
Sputniks, crises
between Syria
and Turkey, in
the Middle East,
Far East. Africa
and elsewhere.
These problems
are all real
enough, but we
, are only playing [
into the hands
of the Kremlin
tyrants, if we
allow them to
adopt unsound economic prac-
tices and to embark again on
deficit spending.
We agree that national de-
fense comes first, but exceedingly
important to that program is a
balanced budget, reduction of
debt, and the maintenance of a
sound dollar.
Increasing the national debt
will not produce missiles, bases,
and satellites faster than knowl-
edge, available manpower, and
material make them possible
Manpower and material, not deb
provide these things. Let us pro-
duce all of them that are neces-
sary to safeguard our Country,
but let us pay for them ourselves
cut of current income, and not
try to saddle the burden upon
future generation*. Our descend-
ents will have problems enough
of their own. Let us not try to
bequeath ours to them.
Moreover, increasing the na
tional debt would be a powerfu
stimulant to inflation and rising
prices which would make it even
more difficult for us to produce
the essentials of national defense.
A sound dollar and a balanced
buoget is the only basis upon
which national security can be j
buiit. j
