Sam Mele, the ex-Minnesota
manager sitting out the rest of
the year back home, tries not to
think about that too much, eith-
er.
Tin- funny part about the
Twins'' switch in managers,
whkh was effected June 9, is
there is such little basic differ-
ence between Ermer, the new
broom, and Mele, the old one
' They're the same age, the

I Nor was he trying anything ]
Mele hadn't when he also get j

They did for Mele, too, in
1965, but the front porch gave |
way last year and then the roof
fell In on him this season.
That’s when Ermer got the
call in Denver.
He doesn’t think he's any
with any fancy phrases to ex-
plain the Twins' spectacular
magician nor does he come up
turn-around.
"Good pitching has had a lot
to do with it," he says. "That
and the fact we’ve been able to
get a hit at the right time. Es-
pecially at home. If we could
win on the road like we do at
home, we would have opened up
a substantial lead by new.”

I keep reading that the Big 33

the participating stars says he
does not think that will happen
on account of. and I quote,
"They'll have to continue it to

It makes sense.
A lot more than firing the
’ manager when the ball club
j isn't going well, but the Twins' i
1 improvement under Ermer is
right there in black and white
for everyone to see and he has
to get the credit for their suc-
cess.
They may even go on to win
this year and that could be the
determining factor insofar as
the front office is concerned. In
the long run though, Eriner will ;
find the Twins pretty much the j
same way — and in the same
places — Mele did.
