SLAVE OR FREE: WHICH?
It Is startling to think Just how much of our lives ore determined at birth.
We have no cholre whatever In the selection of sex or parents, or of the time
or place of our birth. And our rare and 'nationality Is Inherited. With our phy-
sical bodies we receive, too, definite tendencies nnd limitations. Our social en-
vironment brings customs, opinions, tastes, sentiments nnd moral standards.
Wo come also by no choice of our own, Into n religious environment, Inheriting
the God of our family, our community nnd age.
Now, wo may welt ask,. “Is there any freeing of the spirit from the prison
of Its environment?”
We who follow the Christ of God believe most positively there Is!
We know through Christ there Is “the redemption of the soul”: the freeing
of the soul to realize Its rightful Inheritance.
We believe Christ makes the revelation of a ‘truth’, which, while It Inclu-
des all other partial truths, shall make us free from their limitations.
This, we know, Is done through the revolutionary revelation which He
makes; that we are the children of GOD!
Tho coming of this knowledge Into one’s life Is truly like n new birth, be-
cause It Is a new self-consclonsness. The child of God must have no limitations
In the scope of his Interests, nr the circle of his sympathies.
“I am n child of God nnd a brother of all men!” Tbls does not cancel
these other partial truths, nor destroy the other relationship of life, but It DOES
loose us from the limitations uhleh they Impose.
This recognises tlie truth that complete powers of personality enn never find
full and free expression within the small confines and limits of family or pro-
fession, nationality or race, but only within Ihe larger realization of our kinship
to God and to all mankind am I free to realize my highest ami best 'self.
This Is the true significance of llic coming of Christ Into mir lives: “I
am Ihe way, Ihe truth and Ihe life.”
Sincerely yours, in Ills Service,
Marshall VV. Doggett, Jr,
