Arkansas Razorbacks
Shoot For Fourth Win
Against Baylor Bears
By ED FITE
UPI Sports Writer ,
The Arkansas Razorbacks this week try to set the
stage for another of their late championship show-
downs with national champion Texas for Southwest
Conference supremacy.
Coach Frank Broyles' Razorbacks, boasting the only
other untarnished record around the league besides the
brilliant one sported by Texas,
will try to make Baylor’s bum-
blesome Bears their fourth
straight victim and their sec-
ond within the league.
The Arkansas - Baylor noctur-
nal clash at neutral Little Rock
must claim a share of this
week's conference spotlight
with the renewal of the annual
Texas - Oklahoma grudge a few
hours earlier in the Cotton
Bowl at Dallas.
For, if both teams come
through — a* expected — it
means that their Oct. 17 date in
Austin will be the fifth time in
the past six years that the two
teams have met with the win-
ner favored to go on to win or
share the title. Both stand 1-0
in loop standings now.
There will he plenty of other
action around the circuit, this
week, including a conference
game under the lights at Fort
Worth between Texas Tech
(1-1) and Texas Christian (0-1).
The Texas Aggies and Rice
Owfs journey to the west coast
—the Aggies for a night game
against deflated Soutliem Cali-
fornia at Los Angeles and the
Owls for an afternoon date
with Stomford. SMU is idle.
While Texas was proving out
its rights to the nation’s No. 1
rank by spotting Army a touch-
down and rallying to win a 17-
6 decision last Saturday, Ar-
kansas gave every indication it
was finding the combination
that could make it a trouble-
some foe down the stretch.
The young Razorbacks held
TCU to 11 yards rushing, pick- j w
ed off six passes and used its Cuero ......._........... 3
defense to every advantage foi l Gonzales .............. 3
a 29-6 verdict.
The offense still needs quite
a bit of polishing, but it looks
smoother each time out. And,
no other league team except
Texas appears capable of fie ki-
ng one any better.
Rice slwwed some signs of
offensive jelfing in its 24-0 vic-
tory over West Virginia, but,
the caliber of opposition wasn't
% true test. Baylor still was
'neffective on the ground and
its strong air arm wasn’t
enough to ward off a 13-6 Ore-
gon State defeat.
Donnie Anderson revived
Texas Tech’s attack with a
129-yard performance in the
Raiders’ 16-12 victory over the
hapless Aggies, but SMU look-
ed pitifully weak offensively in
scraping out a 14-0 victory over
little Arlington State.
