The Record Is deeply dis-
appointed by the veto of the
natural gas bill by President
Eisenhower.
The veto is a severe blow
to the American principle of
States rights and self gov-
«
ernment and a boon to cen-
tralized Washington control.
Such action could be expect-
ed from Harry Truman, but
hardly from a great Presi-
dent like Dwight D Elsen-
hower.
The fact that the big oil
ar.d gas companys favored
passage of the bill is of little
concern. So did the small
land owners, the small pro-
ducers and almost every
businessman and citizen who
still believe in the principle
cf free enterprise.
The additional fact that
the bill was so strongly op-
posed by socialistic minded
liberals like Lehman of New
York, Humphrey of Minne-
sota, Douglas of Illinois.
Morse of Oregon ar.d Gov.
Mention Williams of Michi-
gan should have provided
ample proof to The Presi-
dent that the measure was
sound and worth-while.
