Racketeers Place Third
In Lubbock Invitational
Westerners ‘Pound’ Plainview
Lubbock High’s B tennis team
placed third over other local
schools during Lubbock’s Fall
Invitational held October 27-28.
In B boys’ singles play,
Jimmy Brown defeated Mark
Ashlock of Coronado, 6-0, 6-0,
but lost to Robby Templeton 6-1,
6-0. James Morris bested Paul
Bumpers from Coronado 2-6, 7-
5, 7-5. LHS player Mike Smith,
was ousted by John Brazill of
Coronado 7-5, 6-2, 8-6. Henry
Benitez beat Bill Pasework of
Coronado 6-0, 6-0. In the third
round, Benitez was again a
winner beating Brian Davis of
Plainview. On the second day of
the tournament, Benitez was
finally overcome by Coronado’s
Doug Davis 6-1, 6-3.
Lubbock’s Tim Roten, in his
first round, beat Hall of
Estacado, but was downed in
the second by Frank McDonald
of Dumas 6-0, 6-4. Thad Bartley
won over Max Thrallkill of
Coronado 7-6, 6-1. Bartley
defeated another Coronado
player, Charles Key in the
second round 6-0, 6-1. In the
third, Bartley was ousted by
Frank McDonald 6-3, 7-5.
Lubbock High’s Cary Long was
bested by Carl Jameson of
Coronado.
In B boys competition, LHS
doubles team of Brown-Smith
was defeated by McDonald-
Huthinson of Dumas 6-2, 6-2.
Benitez-Morris won their first
match 6-0, 6-0. Later, they
defeated the Lubbock doubles
team of Roten-Bartley 6-3, 6-3.
In their third match, Benitez-
Morris were overplayed by
Davis-Templeton of Coronado 7-
5, 6-3. Tim Roten and Thad
Bartley defeated Mike Whitfeld
and Terry Jameson from
Coronado 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. In their
second match, they defeated the
Brownfield doubles team 6-7, 6-
2, 6-3, but lost later to
teammates Benitez-Morris 6-3,
6-3.
Laurie Hutson of LHS
defeated Jean Malouf and Beth
Jones. In the third round match,
Hutson bested Sparks of
Monterey. However, in her
fourth round, she was
eliminated by Trenda Burgess
from Dumas 6-1, 6-3.
Roundballers Bounce Into Play
Against Borger ’Dogs, Nov. 18
Lubbock High roundballers
began workouts Oct. 16 to
bounce into the 72-73 season
Sat., Nov. 18, against the Borger
Bulldogs in the LHS gym.
The sophomore game is
slated for 4:45 p.m. followed by
the JV team at 6:15 p.m. Varsity
basketballers will be set to start
action at 8 p.m.
Under varsity direction of
new Head Coach Glen Hallum
are David Rogers, Chuck
Harjes, Mike Pope, Mike Skeen,
Jimmy Tate, Alan Hill, Gary
Don Mooring, Steve Lusk,
Roland Strong, and Fidencio
Vega.
JV and sophomore players
following the orders of JV
Coach C.E. Carmichael (alco
new to the faculty) are Billy
Duffy, Carlton Barnett, Mark
Meinecke, James Moore,
Tommy Ross, Montie London,
Danny Marruja, Ronnie Coon,
Romando Marquez, Frank
Parker, Ricky Merritt, Paul
Mojica, and Robert Romeriz.
Manager for the Westerners is
Kirk Myers. More players are
expected on both squads after
football season.
Both coaches want to start the
season off on the right foot with
a victory and both feel
attendance by the student body
would play an essential part in
winning the first game. The
Lubbock High basketball

Play-off ties February 21-24
The Westerners tackle the
Coronado Mustangs tonight at
7:30 p.m. at Lowrey Field, for the
fourth game of the district
season.
ON FRIDAY, Nov. 3, the
Westerners upset the Plainview
Bulldogs 10-0. The Westerners
gained over 200 yds. rushing,
permitting the Bulldogs only 82
yds. LHS quarterback David
Cadena made the game’s only
TD with a quarterback sneak at
the Bulldogs’ 2 with a few
seconds left at the half. Johnny
Salazar made the point after
and the Westerners led at
halftime 7-0.
In the second half, the
Westerners again held the dogs
from scoring. With about ten
minutes left in the game, Jesse
Mojica gave the Westerners
another scoring chance when he
intercepted a Plainview pass
and ran it towards the Bulldog
goalline. The Westerners were
unable to get a TD in three tries
so Johnny Salazar booted a 25
yd. field goal and gave the

For Students
Helping out Coach Hallum in
the basketball department this
year is new assistant coach, Mr.
C.E. Carmichael.
Mr. Carmichael was born in
Brown wood, Texas. While at
Brownwood, he played
basketball three years at
Brownwood High School. He
attended Texas Tech
University. Also, teaching at
Matthews Junior High provided
Mr. Carmichael with two years
of coaching experience.
Mr. Carmichael and his wife,
Jennie, have one daughter,
Stacie. Outside of his school
duties, and basketball duties, he
enjoys water skiing, hunting,
and other sports, as a spectator
and a participant. Besides
coaching basketball, he teaches
American History. When asked
how he liked Lubbock High and
the LHS students, he said, “I
really like it, and the kids over
all, I really like them.” He also
added, “Coach Hallum and I are
inviting everyone out to our first
game Nov. 18.”

SATURDAY, OCT. 28, the
Westerners were denied the
Silver Spurs from the Monterey
Plainsmen. Monterey’s
explosive offense, and tough
defense shut out the Westerners
27-0 at Lubbock’s homecoming
game.
In the first quarter Monterey
took the opening kickoff and
four plays later scored on the
Westerner goalline with a
running play. The Westerners
held the Plainsmen from
scoring the rest of the first half
until a few seconds left in the
second quarter, when
Monterey’s Glen Yarbrough
threw a TD pass to Tim Botkin
and Monterey led 13-0 at
halftime.
IN THE SECOND half of
play, Monterey scored two more
TDs to put the game out of reach

averaging 37 yards a punt.
Lubbock High threatened in
the last minutes of the game
when Joe Morales blocked a
Monterey punt deep in
Monterey territory. The
Westerners were unable to score
and the clock ran out with
Monterey on top, 27-0.
