such color commentators as I‘zone of 14 AAA. But one thing.
Frank Gifford, Kyle Rote, or
even Dandy Don Meredith beats
me. But it looks as if we are
stuck with him on Monday
night. However, I still believe
the capitalistic commercially
oriented Network interests are
responsive to the wishes of the
buying public. Maybe if enough
of us expressed our displeasure
In Mr. Cosell, the network would
take him off. (I probably even
spelled his name wrong.)
Back to the Gobblers. Have
you ever seen such a bunch of
battlers? Those of you who
missed the Lockhart game pro-
bably don’t realize that the
game could have easily turned
in the early part of the third
quarter when the Gobblers took
the kick-off and marched di-
rectly to the Lions 5 yard line
only to have the drive wiped
out by a fumble. Then holding
fhe Lions on downs, the Gob-
blers again received the ball on
a short kick about the Lock-
hart 35 yard line, and again
marched directly to the Lions
15 where a missed pitch-out
caused another turn-over. If
you have seen a massive club
such as the Lions in action you
will realize you have to keep
the ball away from them a lot
of the game or they are going
fo score on you. Actually, they
beat the Gobblers on three
plays, an excellently executed
running play in the second-
quarter, which led to a field
goal, a blocked punt, and a
long pass. The fighting Gob-
blers never gave up in that
one, and were still trying to
get on the score board when the
gun ended the game, and in
fact went to Lockhart’s one
yard line on the last play of
the game.
We have all got to keep pulling
for the team, never get down
on them, and never let them
get down. As long as they don’t
give up and keep scrapping, it
can all come together. If we
give up on them, and they on
themselves they can fall apart.
But I can’t see this group of
kids ever giving- un.

If you saw the Yoakum game,
you know we lost Mike Hall in
that one due to a back injury.
Mike is coming along fine, and
we should get him back maybe
by the Columbus game. Mike
is a big asset to the defensive
secondary.
Robert Hopkins played in the
Refugio game coming off with
a broken hand in pre-season
He will help the club as the
season progresses.

Frank Wesley, who was
counted on to be the big gun
in the Gobbler offense is still
limping. He suffered an injured
muscle on his right leg in the
West - Oso scrimmage, and a
twisted ankle in the Yoakum
game, and has not fully healed.
It is a great credit to this young
man’s courage that he is able
to play defense. His being in
the game on defense is a big
lift to the defensive unit.

Joe Sheppard, the starting of-
fensive-right guard received a
cut on his nose in the Refugio
game which required several
stitches, but he is expected to
be ready for Edna.

Intrepid Keeps
America’s Cup
NEWPORT, R. I. — Intrepid
won the America’s Cup Monday
for the United States, nosing
out Australia's Gretel II by 10
boat lengths in a race so close
the two crews at times could
have passed the old trophy back
and fourth.
The victory by 1 minute 44
seconds gave the New York
Yacht club defender a 41 mar-
gin in the best-of-seven series,
but few challengers, if any, e-
ver made it closer than Gretel
II. It was the 21st successful
challenge by the United States
since it won the cup in 1851.
Intrepid had overcome an ear-
ly length lead by the Aussies
and led by 150. yards on the
fourth leg when the everstalk-
ing Gretel II rallied dramati-
cally.
Several wind shifts handi-
capped Intrepid's skipper Bill
Ficker. Meanwhile, the Aussies’
Jim Hardy was sailing In his
kind of wind at seven knots
northwesterly that had dropped
from 12 at the start of race on
Rhode Island Sound’s 24.3-mile
triangular course.
Then the wind veered about
45 degrees and took away Har-
dy’s key weapon, the tacking
duel.

Giants 3-0
HOUSTON — The Astros
blanked the San Francisco
Giants 3-0 last night on the
strength of Jack Billingham’s
six-hitter.
Houston scored all three runs
in the second inning off south-
paw Ron Bryant, 5-8. A walk to
Denis Menke and singles by
Doug Rader and Larry Howard
got the first run in before Norm
Miller’s ground out made it 2-0.
Cesar Cedeno added a perfect
bunt single to push in the other
tally.
