Cuero ISD remains fiscal agent for DLSEC
By Elizabeth Rodriguez
The Cuero Record
The Cuero ISD board of directors
met Jan. 24 at the Cuero ISD board
room on 960 E. Broadway.
Pradip Vora attended the meeting to
speak during the open forum. He
asked the board to consider arrange-
ments to offer land close to the school
for him to open a Taco Bell restaurant.
Sandra Hernandez, Aramark food
service director, announced at the
meeting that John C. French was
given the Gold Award of Distinction
by USDA. Hernandez said results for
Hunt Elementary have not been
announced yet.
Wanda Hays, district nurse, said 61
CISD staff members are participating
in the district-wide “biggest loser”
challenge.
Pam Longbotham, assistant super-
intendent of curriculum and instruc-
tion, read enrollment reports to the
board. She said enrollment is at 2,067,
an increase of 92 students from
January 2012, when enrollment was
1,975. There has been a decrease in
enrollment since December 2012,
however, when enrollment was 2,089.
Longbotham reported the attendance
rate to be 96 percent.
“Last year, the board allowed us to
have two people work in attendance,
it’s really been helpful for us making
sure students are in school,”
Longbotham said.
The board accepted several dona-
tions at the meeting, including a
$4,500 donation from Friends of
Cuero Softball to the athletic depart-
ment. Tractor Supply Company also
donated $1,500 worth of paint and
$500 worth of hand tools to the FFA
for a raffle to raise funds. Hardin
Tubular also donated a 30 inch heavy
well pipe to the fundraiser.
The board approved $1,950,000 in
allocation of funds for the district-
wide infrastructure project. The funds
will go toward architect fees.
The board will begin to meet at 6:30
p.m. instead of 7 p.m. The meetings
will continue to be held the third
Thursday of the month, except for
September and October, when meet-
ings are held the third Monday of the
month.
The board voted to remain as a fis-
cal agent for the DeWitt-Lavaca
Special Education Cooperative for the
2013-2014 school year. However, a
motion was made to begin an exit
strategy that would be effective prior
to the 2014-2015 school year.
Superintendent Jim Haley’s evalua-
tion was completed during closed ses-
sion at the meeting. The board
approved his evaluation and extended
his contract one additional year, until
2016.
“I appreciate the opportunity to
work in Cuero,” Haley said. “I’m
pleased with the direction we’re tak-
ing with a lot of exciting and great
things ahead for our district.”

JAMS thanks members for support
Dear Editor,
The Joe Albert Mathis Sr.
Scholarship Foundation members give
thanks to you for all your support
through out the years.
Without the community support we
could not have been able to donate
school supplies to elementary and jun-
ior high students for the past several
years.
In addition to that JAMS gives out
two or three scholarships to deserving
Cuero high school students every year.
JAMS again gives special thanks to
volunteers, local businesses and indi-
viduals for their generosity in giving
donations and purchasing tickets for
our yearly fun raising activities.
