to be staged
for public
The award winning cast
and crew of the Albany
High School entry in the
University Interscholastic
League one act play com-
petition will mount two
public performances in the
next few days.
The Albany play, scenes
from Sylvia, will be pre-
sented for the public on
Sunday, April 22 at a 3:00
p.m. matinee and again
Monday, April 23 at 7:00
p.m. in the AHS audito-
rium. No admission will
be charged and both per-
formances will be followed
by a reception in the high
school cafeteria.
“I am extremely proud
of this year’s cast and
crew,” director Greta Sher-
rill said. “We were really
excited to advance from
area to district for the
first time in many years,
especially in this highly
competitive district.”
At the district competi-
tion in Anson, the group
placed five individuals on
honor teams at the contest.
“We hope the public
will show its support by
attending these public
performances. These per-
formers have worked so
hard and deserve to have
an interested audience,”
Sherrill added.

Chamber behind wheel of car show
+100 classic autos
expected Saturday
By Kathryn Stapp
Enjoy the sight and sound of
the region’s best classic cars and
motorcycles Saturday during
the sixth annual WRM Albany
Classic Car Show.
The free family event for
auto enthusiasts of all ages will
feature food and fun as well as a
diverse collection of automotive
flashbacks.
The 2012 event will take
place in downtown Albany, with
activities to include a Friday
Night Cruise for local car en-
thusiasts as well as out of town
entrants, a Saturday morning
breakfast, the car show and the
sidewalk fair itself throughout
the day. Local vendors and
organizations are invited to
bring their handcrafted items
for the day, and local nonprofit
organizations have been invited
to set up booths free of charge.
Auto Show
According to Robert Snyder,
who is coordinating the auto
show, most participants do
not enter until the morning of
the event, but he already has
solid commitments from over
30 classic car owners, and he’s
hoping for at least 100 entries.
Local residents will not be
entering competition, but will
display their cars in a “host
lot.” Many of the local owners
will be assisting with the show.
There are over 20 divisions
for the contest, which is open
to antique and classic cars and
trucks, street rods, “muscle
cars,” and all types of custom-

By Melinda L. Lucas
The Albany city council voted unani-
mously to accept ownership and operation
of the Aztec Theater during a special

They also accepted a bid to complete
the remainder of the $2 million park
renovation project, and repealed an or-
dinance put in place less than two years
ago removing limitations for providing
city services outside the city limits.
Aztec Ownership
Jess Phillips, who has served on the
Aztec of Albany Foundation for the past
seven years and is reportedly the only
active board member at the current time,
presented a proposal to transfer owner-
ship of the historical theater from the
nonprofit group to the city.
The facility is currently used for events
